Chapter 8 - Rebuilding the Foundation

Six months passed. Spring bloomed across the rolling hills of Indian Hill, transforming the Sterling Estate into a paradise of green pastures, blossoming cherry trees, and vibrant gardens.

Mia’s recovery had exceeded every doctor's wildest expectations.

Her body accepted the donor heart completely, with zero signs of organ rejection. She had gained healthy weight, her strength had returned, and she could now run across the wide green lawn without losing her breath once.

On a sunny Saturday afternoon, the sound of joyous laughter echoed across the back patio.

Lucas was running through the automatic sprinklers on the lawn, wearing bright blue swim trunks, screaming with delight as he chased the family’s new Golden Retriever puppy, Barnaby.

Mia sat at a wooden picnic table under the shade of a large oak tree, drawing pictures with colorful watercolors. She wore a yellow sundress, her long dark hair tied back with a ribbon, looking like the picture of perfect health.

Sitting nearby on the patio sofa were Sarah and Robert.

Sarah looked entirely transformed. She wore an elegant cream-colored linen dress, her hair styled beautifully, her skin glowing with peace and vitality. Over the past six months, she had enrolled in a business management program at the University of Cincinnati, funded by the family foundation, preparing to take over as Director of the newly established Michael Sterling Children’s Health Initiative—a fifty-million-dollar charity Robert had created to provide free heart screenings and emergency pediatric care for low-income families across the Midwest.

"She looks so happy, Robert," Sarah murmured, leaning back, watching Mia paint. "Sometimes I still wake up in the middle of the night, terrified that I'm back in that diner alley, that Mia is collapsing in the rain again."

Robert reached over, gently taking Sarah’s hand, resting his thumb over her knuckles. "The nightmare is over, Sarah. You brought them through the dark. Now all they have left is the light."

"I could never have done it without you," Sarah said, looking into his eyes with deep, profound affection. "Michael always told me you were his hero. Now I know why."

"Michael was the brave one," Robert said softly, gazing out at the lake. "He walked away from money to protect his soul. I stayed in the castle and built walls. You and these children saved me, Sarah. You gave me a family."

Just then, a sleek black sedan pulled up the driveway.

Marcus stepped out, carrying a leather briefcase, walking up to the patio with a bright smile.

"Good afternoon, Boss. Mrs. Sterling," Marcus bowed respectfully. "I have the final quarterly reports from the board of directors, as well as the legal documents for the foundation."

Robert took the documents, setting them on the table. "How is the company faring without Richard Vance and his allies?"

"Sterling Enterprises stock hit an all-time high this morning," Marcus reported proudly. "The European merger was finalized yesterday, and the public reaction to the Michael Sterling Children’s Health Initiative has boosted our global brand reputation to unprecedented levels. The board unanimously voted to confirm you as Chairman for life."

"Good," Robert said smoothly. "Now tell them I am taking the next three months off."

Marcus blinked, surprised. "Three months, Boss?"

"My family is going on a summer cruise to Alaska," Robert smiled, looking over at Mia and Lucas, who were now both chasing the puppy through the grass. "And my presence is strictly required on the deck."

Marcus grinned, bowing his head. "Understood, Sir. I will inform the board."
