Chapter 4 - The Sanctuary

The drive back to Manhattan was silent, but it was a silence filled with a quiet, rebuilding peace. Sophia had fallen asleep in the backseat, her head resting on her mother’s lap, her small hand clutching Alexander's jacket.

Alexander sat in the front passenger seat, his eyes fixed on the rearview mirror, watching Lauren gently stroke their daughter's hair.

"Where are we going, Alex?" Lauren asked softly, her voice barely audible over the hum of the tires. "We can't go back to the estate. Your mother..."

"We are never going back to the estate," Alexander said, his tone turning firm. "And we are never going near my mother again. I have a private townhouse on the Upper West Side. I bought it five years ago as an investment, and Victoria doesn't have the keys or the access codes. It’s completely secure. That’s our home now."

"And your company?" Lauren asked, concern etching her brow. "She said she would ruin you."

"Let her try," Alexander said, a cold smile touching his lips. "She thinks the Sterling Group belongs to her because of her name. She forgets that I am the one who rebuilt our entire portfolio over the last decade. I know where every asset is hidden, and I know every secret she has. But tonight, I don't care about the money. I only care about you and Sophia."

The car pulled up in front of a beautiful, four-story limestone townhouse on a quiet, tree-lined street. Arthur leaped out to open the door, shielding Lauren and Sophia with a large umbrella as they walked up the heated stone steps.

Inside, the townhouse was warm, smelling of cedarwood and clean linen. The interior was modern but comfortable, a stark contrast to the damp, cold basement they had left behind.

Alexander immediately led them upstairs to the master suite. He ran a warm bath for Lauren, while Arthur went out to a 24-hour gourmet market to purchase organic soups, fresh fruits, and soft bread.

While Lauren bathed, Alexander sat on the edge of the large guest bed where Sophia was sleeping. He had wrapped her in a plush, white cotton robe. He watched her chest rise and fall smoothly, a faint smile on her face as she slept in a bed that didn't smell of mildew.

Lauren walked out of the bathroom a short while later, wearing one of Alexander's clean white shirts. It hung loosely on her thin frame, but the warm water had returned some color to her cheeks.

"She looks so peaceful," Lauren whispered, standing beside Alexander and looking down at Sophia.

"She is safe now," Alexander said, standing up and pulling Lauren into a gentle embrace. He led her to the small dining nook in the bedroom, where Arthur had set up a tray of warm, nourishing chicken broth and fresh bread.

"Eat, please," Alexander begged softly. "You need to regain your strength."

Lauren took a slow spoonful of the soup. The warmth of the food seemed to reach all the way to her soul. She closed her eyes, a single tear slipping down her cheek. "I forgot what it felt like to not be hungry, Alex."

Alexander’s heart squeezed with a painful intensity. He sat opposite her, holding her hand as she ate.

"Tomorrow, I am having a team of doctors come to the house," Alexander said. "We are going to do a full check-up on both you and Sophia. And I’ve already contacted my personal attorney, Marcus Vance. We are going to prepare a full legal offensive against Victoria."

Lauren paused, her spoon hovering over the bowl. "Alex, she is incredibly powerful. She has connections in the city government, the courts... she will fight dirty."

"So will I," Alexander said, his eyes darkening with a cold, relentless light. "She took three years of our lives, Lauren. She starved my daughter and drove my wife to the brink of despair. I am not just going to fight her. I am going to destroy her."
