Chapter 7 - Healing in the Light

While the battle for the Sterling Group raged in the corporate world, the atmosphere inside the Upper West Side townhouse was entirely different. It was a sanctuary of healing, warmth, and rebuilding.
Under Dr. Cho’s careful supervision, Lauren and Sophia began to show incredible signs of recovery. Sophia’s cheeks, once hollow and pale, had filled out, carrying a healthy, rosy pink glow. Her laughter, which had been silent for three years, now echoed through the corridors of the townhouse as she played with her new toys.
Alexander made sure he was home every single day by 4:00 PM. He would leave the corporate tower behind, shed his expensive suit jackets, and spend hours sitting on the carpeted floor of Sophia’s new playroom, building complex castle structures out of colorful wooden blocks.
One afternoon, Alexander walked into the kitchen to find Lauren standing by the window. The warm sunlight bathed her face, highlighting the soft smile she wore as she watched Sophia and Arthur playing fetch with a small golden retriever puppy Alexander had bought for her.
Lauren looked healthy. Her hair was glossy again, and she had gained weight, her frame no longer appearing fragile or broken.
"She looks so happy," Lauren whispered as Alexander walked up behind her, wrapping his arms around her waist and resting his chin on her shoulder.
"She is," Alexander said softly, kissing her neck. "And what about you, Lauren? Are you happy?"
Lauren turned around in his arms, her brown eyes looking deeply into his. "I am, Alex. But sometimes... sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night terrified that I’ll open my eyes and find myself back in that basement. I’m afraid that this is all a dream, and that any moment, your mother will walk through the door and take it all away again."
Alexander took her hands, bringing them to his lips. "I swear to you, Lauren, that will never happen. Victoria is facing twenty years in federal prison. Her trial begins next month, and her lawyers are already begging for a plea deal. She is powerless. She can never touch us again."
He led her to the dining table, where a beautiful, leather-bound book was sitting.
"What is this?" Lauren asked, touching the gold-embossed cover.
"Open it," Alexander smiled.
Lauren opened the book. Inside were professional architectural drawings, interior design concepts, and photographs of a stunning, historic bakery building in the heart of Greenwich Village.
"The... the old Greenwich bakery?" Lauren gasped, her eyes filling with tears of joy. Before she was forced out of her life, her dream had been to own a small, high-end pastry shop in the city.

"I bought the building yesterday," Alexander said gently. "It’s registered entirely in your name, Lauren. The remodeling starts next week. You can design it exactly how you want. You are going to bake again, sweetheart. But this time, you won't be doing it to survive. You’ll be doing it because you love it."
Lauren threw her arms around Alexander’s neck, sobbing with a pure, unadulterated happiness that she hadn't felt in a lifetime. "Thank you, Alex. Thank you for bringing us back to the light."
