Chapter 10 - The Queen of Blackwood

One year later.

The summer sun was setting over Lake Michigan, casting a golden glow across the manicured lawns of the Blackwood estate.

On the grand stone terrace overlooking the water, a long wooden table was set with fine porcelain, fresh flowers, and warm, delicious food.

Lily sat at the head of the table, wearing a simple white linen dress. Her hair was swept up in a loose bun, and her skin radiated a healthy, beautiful glow. Resting in her arms was a newborn baby girl—a dark-haired, blue-eyed angel named Elena.

Ethan, now three years old, was sitting beside her on a high chair, carefully feeding small pieces of soft bread to a friendly golden retriever pup Victor had bought him for his birthday.

"Careful, Ethan," Lily smiled softly, wiping a tiny smear of butter off his chin. "Don't give him all your dinner."

"Doggy hungry, Mama!" Ethan giggled, kicking his feet.

Victor walked out onto the terrace through the French doors. He had left his dark suit jackets and guns inside. Dressed in a comfortable dark sweater with his sleeves rolled up, he looked completely at peace.

He walked up behind Lily’s chair, leaning down to press a soft kiss against her lips, then kissed the forehead of the sleeping newborn in her arms.

"How is she?" Victor asked softly, sliding into the chair beside her and taking Lily’s hand under the table.

"She slept for three hours," Lily smiled, looking at her husband. "She has your appetite, though."

Victor chuckled, his large thumb stroking her wedding ring—the blue diamond sparkling under the golden twilight.

"Dante called from the docks," Victor said casually, taking a sip of his wine. "The new children's hospital wing you funded is completely finished. They're naming it the Lily Blackwood Pediatric Center."

Lily’s eyes shone with deep emotion. "Thank you, Victor. That means more to me than anything."

"You built it, my love," Victor said gently. "You're using our resources to give thousands of forgotten orphans a second chance. You're changing this city."

Lily looked across the terrace, watching the gentle waves of the lake lap against the private shore.

She thought back to two years ago—to the terrified, penniless orphan girl who had stepped into this intimidating mansion expecting only to wipe tears and wash dishes. She remembered the terror of Serena’s heel, the cold marble floor, and the despair of a helpless baby’s cries.

She had faced the darkness, and the darkness had brought her to the man who would tear down mountains to keep her safe.

She was no longer the helpless nanny.

She was the matriarch of the most powerful family in Chicago. She was a mother of two beautiful children. She was the beloved wife of a man who looked at her as if she held the stars in her hands.

Victor reached over, gently lifting Ethan into his lap, letting the little boy play with his watch while holding Lily’s hand tightly in his own.

"What are you thinking about, Queen?" Victor murmured, his ice-blue eyes full of endless warmth as he looked at his wife.

Lily smiled, leaning over to rest her cheek against his broad shoulder, feeling the deep, steady beat of his heart beneath her hand.

"I'm thinking," Lily whispered softly, as the sun dipped below the horizon and the stars began to twinkle over their home, "that we finally have the family we always deserved."

Victor kissed her forehead, pulling his family close into his arms, as the peaceful quiet of the night wrapped around the Blackwood estate—unbroken, safe, and filled with love.
