Chapter 4 - The Shadows of the Past

Upstairs in the master wing, the mansion was dead quiet.
Lily woke up around 3:00 AM. The pain in her ribs was a dull, thumping ache, but the pain medication Dr. Vance had given her kept it manageable.
She threw off the silk duvet and slowly stood up, placing one hand over her side. She didn't care about the luxurious room or the five-hundred-thread-count sheets. She needed to see Ethan.
She opened the connecting door into the nursery.
The nightlight cast a soft, warm amber glow across the room.
To her surprise, Victor was still there.
The fearsome mafia boss had pulled his jacket off, rolled his crisp white shirt sleeves up to his elbows, revealing dark, intricate tattoos that stretched up his forearms. He was sitting in the wooden rocking chair beside the crib, resting his massive chin on his hand, watching the sleeping baby.
Lily hesitated at the door, stepping back to avoid disturbing him.
"You should be resting, Lily," Victor’s voice came quietly through the gloom. He hadn't turned his head, but he knew she was there.
"I... I wanted to check on him," Lily whispered, walking slowly toward the crib.
Victor stood up, stepping aside to give her room.
Lily leaned over the wooden rail, her eyes scanning Ethan’s face. His breathing was peaceful, his small cast resting against his chest. She reached down with her index finger, gently tucking a stray lock of brown hair behind his tiny ear.
"He looks like his mother," Lily murmured softly, without thinking.
The moment the words left her mouth, she froze, realizing she might have crossed a line. The previous Mrs. Blackwood was a subject nobody in the mansion ever dared to speak about.
Victor didn't get angry. He stepped up beside her, looking down at the child.
"Elena died forty minutes after he was born," Victor said, his voice dropping into a rare, quiet cadence of genuine pain. "Complications during surgery. I spent thirty-five years of my life building an empire of blood and concrete, thinking I was invincible. And I couldn't save the one woman who cared about my soul."
Lily looked up at the legendary mob boss. For the first time, she didn't see a monster or a king. She saw a man carrying an unfathomable weight of grief on his shoulders.
"Elena was gentle," Victor continued, his eyes remaining on Ethan. "She hated the violence. She hated the bodyguards, the guns, the blood money. Before she died, she made me promise that Ethan would be raised with love. Not fear."
He turned his head to look at Lily.
"I failed her," Victor said quietly. "I brought a viper into his home because I thought a high-society marriage would secure his financial future. I left him in the hands of monsters."
"You didn't fail him, Mr. Blackwood," Lily said softly, her brown eyes shining with earnest conviction. "You came back tonight. You saved him."
"No," Victor said, reaching out his large, rough hand and gently touching the bandage on Lily’s cheek. "You saved him. You stood between my son and a killer while I was three hundred miles away counting money."
Lily’s heart gave a strange, unexpected flutter. The warmth of his hand against her face sent a shudder down her spine, making her forget the dull ache in her broken ribs.
"From this moment on," Victor declared, his voice firm and absolute, "you are no longer just the nanny in this house, Lily."
May you like
"What am I then?" she asked, barely whispering.
"You are the only person in this city I trust with my life," Victor replied. "And anyone who touches a hair on your head will answer to me."
