Chapter 6 - A New Atmosphere

With the Montigue family eliminated from the board, a sudden, profound calm settled over the Blackwood estate.
The dark, oppressive tension that had lingered in the hallways for months vanished overnight.
Four weeks passed.
Lily’s ribs healed under the watchful care of the private medical staff. Her pale skin regained its healthy, rosy glow, and her quiet confidence began to shine through.
She no longer dressed in the drab, oversized grey nanny uniforms Serena had forced her to wear. Victor had personally instructed a high-end tailor to come to the house, filling Lily’s wardrobe with warm cashmeres, elegant silk blouses, and comfortable tailored trousers.
"Mr. Blackwood, this is too much," Lily had protested the first time three racks of expensive clothes were rolled into her room. "I'm just a nanny."
Victor had paused at her door, his dark eyes sweeping over her with an unreadable expression. "You are the woman who protects my son. You will not wear rags in my house."
As the weeks turned into months, the dynamic inside the mansion shifted completely.
Victor began coming home early every single day. The man who used to spend twenty hours a day in dark boardrooms and underground meetings was now sitting in the family living room every evening at six o'clock.
He watched in silent fascination as Lily taught Ethan how to stack wooden blocks. He listened to her soft, melodic voice reading bedtime stories.
For the first time in his life, Victor Blackwood looked forward to coming home.
One cold December evening, snow was falling heavily outside, dusting the pine trees surrounding the estate in white. A roaring fire crackled in the massive stone fireplace of the main living room.
Ethan, wearing his little blue pajama set with his lightweight cast finally off, was crawling energetically across the thick sheepskin rug, chasing a small wooden train.
Lily was sitting on the rug beside him, laughing as the baby triumphantly knocked over a tower of blocks.
Victor sat on the sofa above them, a glass of scotch in his hand, watching the scene.
"He called me 'Mama' today," Lily said suddenly, looking up at Victor, her cheeks flushing slightly with embarrassment. "I... I tried to correct him! I told him 'No, Ethan, I'm Lily,' but he kept saying it."
Victor lowered his glass. A rare, gentle smile—one that nobody in the criminal underworld had ever seen—appeared on his face.
"Why correct him?" Victor asked softly.
Lily’s heart did a strange flip. "Because... I'm not his mother, Mr. Blackwood. I don't want to take a place that isn't mine."
Victor set his glass on the coffee table. He slid off the sofa, kneeling on the rug directly opposite her, the firelight casting long, warm shadows across his strong features.
"Elena brought him into this world," Victor said, his deep voice carrying a profound weight of sincerity. "But you gave him a life, Lily. You gave him love when he had none. In every way that matters... you are his mother."
Lily looked down at her hands, her breath catching in her throat. "Victor..."
It was the first time she had called him by his first name instead of "Mr. Blackwood."
Victor reached out, taking both of her soft hands into his large, calloused palms.
"I spent forty years believing that power meant fear," Victor murmured, his thumb gently stroking the delicate back of her hand. "I built walls around my heart so high no one could ever touch me again. But when I saw you lying on that marble floor, bleeding for my child... those walls crumbled."
Lily looked up into his ice-blue eyes, finding no coldness there—only a deep, burning flame of devotion that made her world tilt on its axis.

"Victor... I'm just a girl with nothing—"
"You are everything to us," Victor interrupted, his voice fiercely absolute.
