Chapter 7 - The Don's Declaration

The following week, Gabriel made a move that stunned the entire Chicago syndicate.
He called an emergency meeting of the Five Families at the grand ballroom of the Drake Hotel downtown. It was the traditional neutral ground where mafia dons settled disputes, declared treaties, and solidified power structures.
Norah sat in a private, bulletproof glass balcony overlooking the ballroom, accompanied by Mrs. Rossi and four elite Moretti guards. Down below, over fifty high-ranking syndicate members sat at long mahogany tables, their faces dark and expectant.
Gabriel stood at the head of the room, dressed in an immaculate charcoal three-piece suit, looking every bit the ruler of the city.
"Gentlemen," Gabriel’s voice boomed through the ballroom speakers, cold and commanding. "We gather today to acknowledge the absolute defeat of the Radrenko network. The Bratva no longer operates within the state of Illinois. Their assets have been absorbed by the Moretti family."
A murmur of agreement and quiet respect rippled through the gathered dons.
"Furthermore," Gabriel continued, his eyes sweeping across the room with lethal authority, "I am making an official declaration regarding my household."
He turned slightly, looking up toward the private balcony where Norah sat.
"Norah Bennett and her son, Leo, are under my personal protection," Gabriel announced, his voice carrying an absolute, ironclad weight. "Any action taken against them—any threat, any disrespect, any breach of their safety—will be treated as a direct declaration of war against me personally. There will be no negotiations. No buyouts. Only absolute annihilation."
The room went dead silent.
In the history of the Chicago syndicate, a don had rarely placed a woman without mafia lineage under such a terrifying, absolute umbrella of protection.
In the balcony, Norah felt her heart swell with an overwhelming wave of emotion. Tears gathered in her eyes as she looked down at Gabriel. He wasn't hiding her away like a shame or keeping her as a mistress in the shadows—he was placing her beside him at the very peak of his empire.
Down on the floor, Dante stepped up beside Gabriel, raising a glass of scotch. "To Don Moretti! And to the future Lady of the house!"
The room erupted into cheers, glasses clinking across the ballroom as the bosses accepted the new reality.
That evening, back at the estate, Gabriel entered Norah's room after Leo had been tucked into his crib.
Norah walked up to him immediately, wrapping her arms around his waist, resting her head against his broad chest. "You didn't have to do that at the hotel, Gabriel. You didn't have to put yourself on the line like that."
Gabriel wrapped his arms around her, burying his face in her hair. "I wanted the entire world to know who you belong to, Norah. And who I belong to."
May you like
He pulled back slightly, looking down into her eyes. "I love you, Norah. I think I've loved you since the second you grabbed my leg in that apartment and fought for your son."
Norah smiled through her tears, reaching up to touch his face. "I love you too, Gabriel. So much."
