Chapter 5 - Rules of Engagement

The kitchen quickly filled with the rich, intoxicating aroma of garlic, onions, and searing meat. Maya didn't have access to her usual cheap bodega spices, but Damian's pantry was stocked with world-class ingredients. She improvised a rustic, Mediterranean-style braised chicken, her movements fluid and confident.
Damian watched her from his stool, his scotch forgotten. For the first time, he didn't look like a crime boss calculating his next assassination; he looked like a man captivated by a force he couldn't control.
"You move like a dancer," he observed quietly, his voice cutting through the sizzle of the pan.
"It’s called efficiency," Maya replied, turning to look at him as she stirred the sauce. "In a busy diner, if you waste a single step, someone's eggs get cold and your tip disappears. My father taught me that. He was a short-order cook before his heart gave out."
"He died in front of you," Damian stated. It wasn't a question.
Maya’s hand paused for a fraction of a second before she resumed stirring. "Your people are very thorough. Yes. He died on our kitchen floor. The ambulance took forty-five minutes because our neighborhood wasn't a priority for the city. That's why I didn't leave you in that alley, Damian. I know what it looks like when the world decides someone isn't worth saving."
Damian stood up, stepping around the island until he was standing directly behind her. The heat radiating from his body was palpable, a powerful, grounding presence that made her breath hitch.
"The world didn't save me, Maya," he whispered, his hand coming down to rest over hers on the handle of the spoon. His touch was electric, sending a shiver straight down her spine. "You did. And in my world, when someone saves the king, they become the most precious piece on the board."
Maya turned slowly within his hold, her chest nearly touching his. The proximity was intoxicating, dangerous, and completely unavoidable.
"I'm not a piece in your game, Damian," she murmured, her eyes dropping to his lips.
May you like
"Then stop playing by my rules," he replied, and before she could think, his mouth came down on hers.
The kiss wasn't gentle; it was hungry, desperate, a collision of two entirely different worlds tearing into each other. Maya wrapped her arms around his neck, pulling him closer, letting the taste of scotch and raw power wash away the fear that had consumed her for days. For a few brief minutes, the war outside didn't exist. There was only the heat of the stove and the man holding her like she was the only anchor in his stormy life.
