Chapter 6 - A Secret Disclosed

The morning after brought a harsh return to reality.
Maya woke up in Damian’s master suite, the sunlight spilling through the massive windows. Damian was already gone, but the scent of him remained on the dark silk sheets.
When she went downstairs, she found the mansion in a state of high alert. Marcus was standing in the foyer, barking orders into a secure satellite phone, while four extra security details were being deployed to the outer perimeter.
"What happened?" Maya asked, a knot of dread tightening in her stomach.
Marcus looked at her, his face grim. "Mr. Voss left for the city three hours ago. We found the mole, Miss Ellison. The person who tipped off the Marcones about his location the night you found him in the alley."
Maya felt the air leave her lungs. "Who was it?"
"Anthony Voss," Marcus said quietly. "His cousin. The head of our logistics operation. He’s been funneling information to the Marcones for six months in exchange for a cut of their northern drug routes. Mr. Voss went to handle the execution personally."
Maya leaned against the stone wall, a wave of nausea washing over her. This was the true, ugly underbelly of the life she had stumbled into. Betrayal, family blood spilled on marble, and a cycle of violence that never seemed to end.
"Will he be alright?" she whispered.
"Mr. Voss is the predator in this city, Miss Ellison. Not the prey," Marcus said confidently. "But Anthony knew about the estate's secondary security codes. We are changing everything right now, but I need you to stay in the interior bunker until Mr. Voss returns. We can't risk the Marcones launching a counter-strike while the family is divided."
Before Maya could reply, the mansion’s primary alarms began to wail—a deafening, mechanical shriek that shattered the morning quiet.

"Breach at the North Gate!" a voice screamed over Marcus’s radio. "We have heavy ordnance! Multiple vehicles incoming!"
Marcus drew a massive silver pistol from his suit. "Marcus to Echo team, seal the bunker! Miss Ellison, move! Now!"
