Chapter 7 - The Trap at the Docks

The attack on the estate was a diversion.
As Marcus led Maya through the reinforced steel doors of the underground bunker, a massive explosion rocked the upper floors of the mansion, sending a shudder through the concrete foundations. The lights flickered, dying out completely before the red emergency backup generators kicked in, bathing the underground chamber in an eerie, crimson glow.
"They aren't here to capture the estate," Maya realized, her mind racing with a sudden, terrifying clarity. "Anthony didn't give them the codes to attack this place. He gave them the codes to draw Damian's security forces away from the city."
Marcus froze, his radio crackling with static. "Boss... we’re trying to reach the city detail, but the signal jammer is active. We can't get through."
"Where is Damian?" Maya demanded, grabbing Marcus by his lapels. "Where did he go to find Anthony?"
"The Brooklyn Docks," Marcus said, his eyes widening as he realized the truth of her calculation. "Pier 42. It’s an isolated warehouse we use for high-value cargo. He only took six men with him."
"Then we’re going to Brooklyn," Maya said, her voice dropping into that flat, determined tone she used when survival was the only option.
"Absolutely not," Marcus countered. "My orders are to keep you alive—"

"If Damian dies, do you think the Marcones will leave me alive in this hole?" Maya shrieked. "Use the secondary exit. We take one of the unlisted cars. If we don't move now, Marcus, your boss is going to be dead before the sun sets."
Ten minutes later, a non-descript gray sedan smashed through a hidden wooden gate at the back of the property, tearing onto the highway toward Brooklyn. Maya sat in the passenger seat, a heavy tactical vest strapped over her t-shirt, her hands clenched into fists. She didn't know how to shoot a gun, but she knew how to fight for her life, and she wasn't about to let the only man who had ever made her feel safe be slaughtered in the dark.
