Chapter 5 - Outcasts and Alliances

"DOWN!" Silas yelled, diving across the room and tackling Renata and Lily to the floor as muffled gunshots tore through the wooden walls.
Tear gas canisters rolled across the floorboards, spewing thick, grey smoke. Marcus hadn't waited for us to make a move—he had used thermal drone scanning across the estate grounds to track our heat signatures.
"To the lower tunnel!" I shouted, grabbing Lily and shielding her body with mine as bullets splattered the plaster above us.
Silas laid down suppressing fire, his sidearm barking three precise shots that drove the tactical team back from the porch. We ducked through the trapdoor into the lower garage just as the carriage house upper floor burst into flames from incendiary rounds.
I threw Renata and Lily into the passenger seat of the 1967 Aston Martin DB5, roared the engine to life, and slammed the accelerator. The heavy car smashed through the wooden barn doors, bursting out into the blinding snowstorm that had just begun to fall over the valley.
Tires screeched as two dark SUVs swerved to block the driveway. Silas leaned out the passenger window, firing with lethal accuracy into the tires of the lead vehicle. The SUV swerved wildly, flipping onto its side and blocking the narrow road for the pursuers behind us.
We hit the main highway doing ninety miles an hour, leaving Hollow Crest burning in our rearview mirror.

"Where do we go now?" Renata asked, clutching a terrified Lily against her chest as the wind roared past us.
"To the old docks," I said, my knuckles white on the steering wheel. "It’s time to call in the debts my father was actually owed."
