Chapter 9 - The Day of Reckoning

Two weeks later, the sun rose bright and golden over a clear winter skyline.
The fallout was swift and absolute. Vivian Calloway and Marcus Doyle were charged with federal conspiracy, kidnapping, grand larceny, and treason-related financial crimes. Viktor Vancea's international syndicate was dismantled by federal authorities using the ciphers Renata had uncovered.
Ashford Global was fully restored to my control, cleared of all shadow debts and corruption.
I stood in the newly renovated foyer of Hollow Crest. The damp air, the oppressive dark, and the ghosts of my father’s sins were gone. Light poured through massive restored stained-glass windows, reflecting off fresh hardwood floors.
Footsteps sounded on the grand staircase.
Renata walked down, wearing a soft cream cashmere sweater, her dark hair pinned back gracefully. She looked radiant, strong, and completely at peace. Behind her, tiny footsteps came thundering down the stairs.
"Julian!" Lily squeaked, holding a drawing she had made.
I knelt down on the floor—the same floor where two weeks ago I had made a promise to a barefoot little girl—and caught her as she flew into my arms.
"Look!" she said, holding up a bright crayon drawing of a large house with three figures holding hands under a big yellow sun: a man, a woman, and a little girl with braids.
"It’s beautiful, Lily," I said, my chest swelling with a warmth I hadn't felt in thirty-six years. "The best painting in the entire house."
Renata came to stand beside us, looking down with a gentle, tender smile. "She insists on putting it on the refrigerator in the main kitchen."

Renata’s breath caught slightly, her cheeks flushing a delicate pink.
