Chapter 7 - The Reckoning of the Shadows

While the exhibition was a triumph, the snake had not been completely defanged.

Later that night, as the museum emptied and the staff began to turn down the lights, Julian and Norah sat on the steps of the grand lobby.

“We did it,” Norah said, her head resting tiredly on Julian’s shoulder. It felt entirely natural to be there, her body aligning with his as if they had been doing this for years.

“Almost,” Julian said, his hand wrapping around hers. “Vance is still out there. He’s been officially removed from the board, but his legal team is scrambling. He’s going to try to take his shares and build a rival firm. He still wants to destroy Hudson Rise.”

“He can’t,” Norah said, looking up at him. “Not after tonight. The public is on your side now.”

Suddenly, Julian’s phone buzzed. It was Marcus.

Julian answered, his face tightening instantly. “What is it, Marcus?”

“Sir,” Marcus’s voice was tense. “Vance’s assistant just tried to access the secure archives at the Sinclair Tower. We caught him, but before we did, he managed to download a encrypted file from your father’s old digital vault.”

Julian stood up, his jaw clenching. “My father’s vault? What was in there?”

“We don’t know, sir. The file is heavily encrypted, but it’s labeled ‘Project Phoenix, 2018’.”

Julian’s face went entirely pale.

Norah stood up beside him, sensing the sudden, freezing shift in the air. “Julian? What is Project Phoenix?”

Julian didn’t answer for a long moment. He stared out the glass doors of the museum, his hand shaking slightly.

“Project Phoenix,” Julian said, his voice barely audible, “was my father’s plan to buy up land in Queens. It was the precursor to Hudson Rise. But there were rumors... rumors that he used illegal coercion to force families out of their homes. If Vance has proof of that... he can destroy the entire project, and my family’s legacy, permanently.”

“But your father is gone,” Norah said. “You didn’t do that.”

May you like

“It doesn’t matter,” Julian said, his voice hollow. “My name is Sinclair. If my father’s crimes are made public, the city will cancel our contracts. Thousands of people will lose their jobs. And everything I’ve worked to build—everything I’ve tried to do to make up for his mistakes—will be worthless.”

He looked at her, his eyes filled with a sudden, devastating despair. “I told you, Norah. In my world, the shadows always find a way back in.”
