Chapter 4 - The Arrival

By 6:30 PM, the estate grounds were glowing beneath hundreds of warm, strategic landscape lights. Valets in crisp black uniforms lined the long, winding cobblestone driveway, parking millions of dollars worth of Lamborghinis, Ferraris, and Bentleys.
Inside the grand ballroom, soft jazz played from a string quartet positioned near the floor-to-ceiling glass doors. Over fifty of Atlanta’s most influential figures—real estate tycoons, politicians, socialites, and corporate executives—mingled, drinking vintage Dom Pérignon champagne.
Vanessa stood at the center of the room like a queen addressing her court.
She wore a breathtaking crimson strapless gown that accentuated her figure, her hair styled in soft Hollywood waves. On her finger, the eight-carat diamond ring sparkled blindingly beneath the crystal chandeliers.
"Vanessa, darling! The estate is absolutely divine!" squeaked Charlotte Montgomery, a prominent local socialite, sipping her champagne. "Ethan really outdid himself!"
Vanessa beamed, swirling her glass. "Oh, you know Ethan. He insisted on buying me something private and peaceful. He’s so protective of my happiness."
"And where is the mysterious billionaire?" asked Julian Vance, a high-end art dealer. "We've all been dying to meet him!"
"His flight was slightly delayed from New York," Vanessa lied smoothly, checking her diamond-encrusted watch. "He’s dressing in the guesthouse as we speak. He’ll be joining us for the toast at seven sharp."
Just then, a tall, shadowy figure walked through the heavy front doors, accompanied by two bodyguards.
Vanessa’s smile froze for a fraction of a second.
It was Richard Vance.
He wore a sharp charcoal suit, a smirk playing on his thin lips as his eyes scanned the opulent room.
Vanessa excused herself from her friends and quickly intercepted Vance near the grand staircase.
"Richard!" she whispered fiercely, grabbing his arm and pulling him into a quiet alcove. "What are you doing here?! I told you not to come in person!"
Vance chuckled, sipping champagne he had plucked from a passing server's tray. "Relax, my dear. I received a private, hand-delivered invitation signed by you an hour ago."
Vanessa blinked, confused. " signed an invitation for you? I did no such thing!"
Vance pulled a heavy cream card from his jacket pocket and handed it to her. Vanessa looked at it. It was indeed her handwriting, perfect down to the delicate swirl on the 'V'.
A sudden, strange chill touched the back of her neck, but she quickly brushed it off. "It doesn't matter. You shouldn't be here. Ethan will be downstairs in ten minutes!"
"That's the whole point," Vance sneered softly, leaning in close. "Do you have the signed trust transfer documents?"
"I told you, I'll get them signed tonight after he’s had a few drinks!" Vanessa hissed. "Now go stand near the terrace doors and stay out of sight until I call you."
"Don't take too long, Vanessa," Vance warned, his eyes cold. "If Caldwell discovers our little deal before those documents are filed, we both go to federal prison."
"He won't discover anything," Vanessa declared with absolute confidence. "The man is stupidly, hopelessly in love with me. I have him wrapped around my pinky finger."
She turned away from Vance, smoothing her dress, and walked back toward the center of the ballroom.
Suddenly, the house lights dimmed slightly.
The string quartet stopped playing, transitioning into a grand, solemn fanfare.
A hush fell over the fifty wealthy guests. All eyes turned toward the sweeping grand staircase at the far end of the ballroom.
Vanessa’s heart beat wildly against her ribs. She smoothed her gown, plastering a radiant, loving smile onto her face, and stepped toward the base of the stairs, ready to throw her arms around her billionaire fiancé.
"Ladies and gentlemen," Marcus's booming, authoritative voice echoed through the estate’s speaker system. "Please welcome your host... Mr. Ethan Caldwell."
A man stepped out onto the top landing of the grand staircase.
He was breathtakingly handsome, tall, and broad-shouldered, wearing an immaculate black tuxedo that fit him like armor. He radiated power, wealth, and an undeniable, terrifying aura of total command.
Vanessa took a breath, her smile radiant. "Ethan, darling!" she called out softly.
The man slowly descended the stairs, step by step, his dark grey eyes fixed entirely on Vanessa.
As he reached the bottom step, the brilliant chandelier light caught his face clearly.
Vanessa stared at him.
Her radiant smile began to waver.
There was something about his stance. The set of his jaw. The way his eyes locked onto her with a cold, unyielding intensity that made her stomach drop into a pit of ice.
She looked at his face. The sharp features were identical to the photographs of Ethan Caldwell she had adored for months.
But then... he spoke.
"Good evening, everyone," Ethan said, his deep, cultured voice resonating through the room.
Vanessa gasped.
The voice was identical to Ethan’s... but the cadence, the subtle rhythm, the lingering shadow in his eyes...
She looked down at his right hand. A small, faint scar rested near his thumb—a scar she had seen a thousand times.

And then... Ethan leaned forward slightly, looking directly into Vanessa’s trembling eyes, and spoke five quiet words in a soft, drawling Georgia accent:
"You eat when I say you eat."
