Chapter 7 - The Cleansing

The grand ballroom remained silent for a long moment after the police cars drove away, their red and blue sirens flashing against the high arched windows.
Ethan turned back to face his guests. The tension in the room was palpable, but Ethan’s face was completely calm.
"I apologize for the dramatic interruption to your evening, ladies and gentlemen," Ethan said smoothly, picking up his champagne glass once more. "The catering staff will now serve a six-course dinner prepared by Chef Laurent. Please, enjoy the rest of your night."
The guests, recovering from the sheer shock of witnessing the downfall of a social climber and a corporate criminal, began to clap enthusiastically. They quickly moved toward the grand dining room, talking excitedly about the incredible spectacle they had just witnessed.
Ethan walked out through the open terrace doors, stepping into the cool, crisp night air.
He leaned against the stone balustrade, looking out over the quiet dark gardens and the shimmering swimming pool he had spent yesterday afternoon scrubbing.
"You handled that with remarkable restraint," a voice said softly behind him.
Ethan turned to see his sister Claire stepping out onto the terrace, holding two glasses of sparkling water. She walked over and handed one to him.
"Restraint?" Ethan chuckled bitterly, taking a sip. "I spent two weeks letting her walk on me, Claire."
"And you exposed a massive corporate conspiracy, saved your company tens of millions, and gave a hardworking girl a life-changing gift," Claire pointed out, nudging his shoulder gently. "I'd say you did pretty well."
Ethan looked out into the darkness, letting out a long, heavy breath. The adrenaline that had sustained him for the past fourteen days was finally draining away, leaving behind a deep, hollow tiredness.
"I really thought she loved me, Claire," Ethan murmured quietly. "Before the disguise... before the house... I really thought I had found someone."
Claire placed a warm, comforting hand on her brother's arm. "You were in love with an idea, Ethan. Vanessa was an actress. But don't let a parasite like her make you close your heart to the rest of the world. There are good people out there. People who see you for who you really are."
Ethan looked down at his hands. The callouses from the broom handle were still there. "I think I need to stay away from romance for a very long time."

"Fair enough," Claire smiled gently. "But first, you need to eat a real meal, take a thirty-hour nap, and burn that basement cot."
Ethan laughed—a genuine, warm laugh that cleared the last lingering shadows from his chest. "That sounds like the best plan I've heard all week."
