Chapter 5 - Gunfire in the Alley

At precisely three-thirty in the morning, the sharp, acrid smell of burning gasoline drifted through the building's old air vents, waking Clara instantly.

She bolted out of bed, her heart hammering against her ribs. She ran into Lily’s bedroom, lifting the sleepy seven-year-old out of bed before the child could fully wake up. "Lily, sweetie, put your shoes on right now. Don't ask questions, just grab your bear."

Smoke was already rising through the floorboards of the hallway, thick and dark. The alley door downstairs had been forced open, and bright orange flames were licking at the wooden steps leading down into the bakery's storage room.

Holding Lily tightly against her hip, Clara rushed toward the front fire escape window. But before she could unlatch the sash, a loud bang echoed through the narrow street outside, followed immediately by the sharp shatter of breaking glass.

"Clara! Get away from the window!" a voice roared from the alley below.

It was Roman.

Down in the narrow brick passage separating the bakery from the neighboring flower shop, three men in dark jackets were frantically hurling glass jars filled with gasoline against the cellar foundation. Roman stood at the alley entrance, his coat flying open, a heavy stainless-steel pistol held firmly in his right hand.

Gunfire shattered the quiet of the North End, sharp, deafening cracks echoing off the historic brick facades. Clara pulled Lily down onto the hardwood floor beneath the window sill, wrapping her arms around the terrified child and covering her ears as shouts and rapid gunshots echoed through the night.

Within minutes, heavy, frantic boots pounded up the internal wooden staircase. The front door of her apartment was kicked wide open.

Roman stood in the doorway, his face streaked with black soot, his tie undone, and a bright crimson bloodstain rapidly spreading across the upper sleeve of his gray shirt.

"We have to move now!" he ordered, extending his uninjured right arm toward them.

Clara didn't hesitate for a single second. She scooped up Lily, threw a heavy winter blanket over the child's shoulders, and grabbed Roman's hand.
