Chapter 8 - Reopening the Hearth

One week later, the crisp winter air above Hanover Street was once again filled with the heavenly scent of roasting coffee, caramelized sugar, and fresh sourdough.

The front window of Evans Bakery sparkled in the morning sun, completely restored and polished to a mirror shine. Above the entrance hung a brand-new, hand-carved wooden sign featuring gold-leaf lettering: Evans Bakery & Café.

Inside, a long line of neighborhood residents stretched out the front door and down the sidewalk. Old men sat in their favorite corner chairs sipping espresso, mothers bought fresh morning pastries for their children, and Lily sat happily at a low table near the back counter, coloring in a new book with bright crayons.

At eight o'clock sharp, the brass bell above the door chimed loudly.

The ambient chatter inside the shop quieted down as Roman Valenti walked through the door. He wore his tailored charcoal overcoat, his dark hair brushed back, looking every bit the formidable figure who commanded respect across the city. But as his eyes found Clara standing behind the counter, a soft, genuine smile transformed his features.

He walked past the waiting customers, who respectfully stepped aside to give him room.

"Good morning, Mr. Valenti," Clara said, a brilliant smile lighting up her face as she leaned her flour-dusted hands against the glass case. "You are remarkably punctual."

"I told you once before, Clara," Roman said, leaning over the counter until he was close to her. "Punctuality is a habit of men who value what matters most."

"And what matters most to you today?" she asked softly.

Roman reached into his inner jacket pocket, pulled out a small, exquisite silver box tied with a thin silk ribbon, and placed it gently on the marble counter between them. "I have come to make a final offer."
