Chapter 7 - The Downfall of the Syndicate

For the next four days, Clara and Lily remained at the Marblehead estate under Roman’s absolute protection. The local news broadcasts were dominated by breaking reports of massive, coordinated federal raids across Massachusetts. Dozens of high-ranking mob figures, corrupt city building inspectors, and dirty police officials were taken into custody as prosecutors utilized a goldmine of evidence provided by an "unnamed confidential source"—the very ledger Clara had retrieved from the cellar wall.

Roman worked around the clock from his private library, managing a legal team, consulting with federal prosecutors, and leveraging his vast financial assets to permanently dismantle the criminal organizations that had preyed on the North End for generations.

On the fifth morning, Roman walked into the sunlit breakfast room dressed in a crisp white dress shirt and a dark tailored suit. He carried a heavy manila envelope beneath his arm.

He set it down on the table right beside Clara’s coffee cup.

"What is this?" she asked, looking up from her plate.

"Open it and see," Roman replied, taking a seat opposite her.

Clara unwound the string clasp and pulled out the legal documents inside. Tucked at the front was a pristine, officially stamped property deed for the Evans Bakery building on Hanover Street. It was completely free of all mortgages, tax liens, and corporate encumbrances, naming Clara Evans as the sole, undisputed owner of the land and structure. Beneath it sat a bank draft from the city housing authority reimbursing her family for years of fraudulent fees.

"It is entirely yours," Roman said smoothly. "No debts. No threats. The men who targeted your father are going to spend the rest of their lives in federal prison."

Clara stared down at the crisp legal seals, tears welling in her eyes as the crushing weight that had sat on her chest for three years finally evaporated into nothing. She looked across the table at Roman, her heart overflowing with a warmth she could no longer suppress.

"You gave me back my life," she whispered.

"No, Clara," Roman said softly, reaching across the table to cover her hand with his own. "You gave me back mine."
