Chapter 10 - The Third Red Door

Late that evening, after the guests had gone home and the backyard was quiet under a blanket of bright, silvery stars, Claire walked upstairs to tuck the twins into bed.

The children's bedroom was soft and warm, illuminated by the gentle glow of a dinosaur nightlight in the corner.

Grace was snuggled beneath her pink duvet, holding Copper the stuffed fox. Lucas was beside her in his twin bed, his wooden dinosaur carving sitting on his nightstand.

Claire sat on the edge of Grace’s bed, pulling the blanket up to her daughter’s chin.

"Did you have a good birthday, sweetie?" Claire asked softly.

"It was the best birthday ever," Grace murmured, her eyelids heavy with sleep. "I got six new paint brushes, and David promised to take us to the science museum on Saturday."

Lucas rolled over, looking up at Claire with his bright green eyes. "Mom?"

"Yes, my big boy?"

"Remember when we were at that scary court place with the judge?" Lucas asked quietly.

Claire’s heart gave a small, gentle tug, but she kept her smile warm and steady. "I remember."

"Grace and I played the red door game," Lucas whispered, stretching his arm out to touch Claire’s hand. "We found four doors."

Claire knelt between their beds, taking Lucas's hand in one of hers and Grace's hand in the other.

"Do you know what those doors were for, Lucas?" Claire asked gently.

Grace opened her eyes slightly, looking at her mother. "What for?"

"They were there to show us that no matter how scary or dark a room seems," Claire explained, her voice dropping into a beautiful, soothing lullaby cadence, "there is always a way out. There is always a door that leads to the sunshine, to love, and to home."

Grace smiled, resting her cheek against her pillow. "You were our third red door, Mom."

The words landed softly in the quiet room, sweeter than any melody Claire had ever heard.

"And you were mine," Claire whispered, kissing Grace's forehead, then leaning over to kiss Lucas's cheek. "Sweet dreams, my angels."

"Sweet dreams, Mom," they murmured together.

Claire stood up slowly, walked to the bedroom door, and pulled it almost shut, leaving a warm sliver of light streaming across the floor.

She walked down the hallway, down the wooden stairs, and out onto the back porch where the cool night breeze rustled through the oak trees.

David was standing near the garden path, looking up at the stars, holding two mugs of warm tea. He turned as he heard her footsteps, offering her a soft, loving smile.

Claire walked down the porch steps, slid her hand comfortably into David’s, and looked up at the vast, beautiful night sky.

She had faced the fire. She had broken the lies. She had protected her blood, her heart, and her children.

And as she stood there in the quiet beauty of her home, surrounded by love, she knew that no shadow could ever touch them again.
