Chapter 5 - The Public Execution

By Thursday morning, the story broke across the front page of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and was picked up by national news outlets:

ST. LOUIS HOSPITAL DYNASTY ACCUSED OF IVF EMBRYO SWAP TO FRAUDULENTLY CLAIM $180M ESTATE.

The fallout was instantaneous and merciless.

Before noon, the board of directors at Whitmore Memorial Hospital held an emergency meeting. They stripped Margaret Whitmore of her title as Board Chair, revoked her executive access, and locked her out of the building.

At the same time, the Missouri State Department of Health suspended Whitmore Reproductive Center’s medical license pending a full federal criminal investigation. Patients flooded the clinic’s parking lot, demanding their records, demanding audits of their own genetic material, and filing a class-action lawsuit that threatened to wipe out the clinic’s insurance reserves within forty-eight hours.

Ryan Whitmore, released on a two-million-dollar bond paid for by selling his luxury yacht, sat in his attorney’s office on the thirty-fifth floor of a downtown skyscraper.

His hair was unwashed, his shirt unbuttoned at the collar. Bernard Voss sat across from him, looking thoroughly defeated.

"The District Attorney just filed twelve criminal counts, Ryan," Voss said, his voice flat. "Medical fraud, conspiracy, falsification of public records, and grand larceny by trick. They are offering a plea deal: eight years in federal prison if you turn state's evidence against your mother."

Ryan stared out the floor-to-ceiling window at the city below, his eyes hollow. "Eight years? I... I can't go to prison, Bernard! I’m a surgeon! I’m a Whitmore!"

"You're not a surgeon anymore," Voss snapped. "The medical board revoked your license two hours ago. And your mother’s legal team just filed a notice claiming that you acted alone—that she had no knowledge of the embryo swap."

Ryan let out a harsh, hysterical laugh. "She planned the whole thing! She was the one who signed the transfer order in the clinic basement! She told me if I didn't get custody of those kids, she would write me out of the family trust!"

"Then you had better take the plea deal before she takes hers," Voss warned cold-bloodedly.

Suddenly, the office door opened.

Two federal agents in dark suits stepped into the room, followed by Maya Torres and David Vance.

Ryan scrambled out of his chair, backing away toward the window. "What is this? This is my attorney's private office!"

"Ryan Whitmore," the lead FBI agent said, pulling a silver badge from his coat. "We have an arrest warrant issued by the United States District Court for Eastern Missouri. You are charged with federal healthcare fraud, wire fraud, and illegal transportation of genetic material."

As the agents stepped forward and forced Ryan to his knees, cuffing his hands behind his back, Maya stepped up, looking down at him with quiet, unyielding triumph.

"Claire wanted me to give you a message, Ryan," Maya whispered.

Ryan looked up, tears of panic finally breaking through his arrogant facade. "What? What did she say?"

"She said your six minutes of truth in Courtroom 4B cost you your family, your business, your freedom, and your name," Maya said smoothly. "And she hopes the food in federal prison is better than the bruised apples you left in her kitchen."
