Chapter 3 - The Gathering Storm

The side door of the courtroom opened twenty minutes later.

Hannah Greene walked out, holding Grace and Lucas by their hands. The hallway outside was silent, the locked courtroom doors keeping the media and the public at bay.

"Mommy!" Grace cried, letting go of Hannah’s hand and running across the carpet to throw her arms around Claire’s waist.

Lucas followed, his dinosaur tie slightly crooked, his small fingers wrapping around Claire’s coat hem. "We found four red doors, Mom. Grace found three, but I found one on the fire extinguisher."

Claire dropped to her knees on the marble floor. She pulled both of her children into her arms, burying her face in the soft crook of Grace's neck, breathing in the scent of baby shampoo and fresh rain.

She held them so tightly that Lucas made a small, happy grunt.

"Are we going home now?" Lucas asked softly.

"Yes, my sweet boy," Claire choked out, a single, hot tear finally spilling over her lashes and soaking into Grace’s denim jacket. "We are going home."

Behind them, two armed sheriff's deputies were standing over Ryan and Margaret. Ryan’s designer jacket was off, his hands cuffed behind his back. Margaret was being led out through the judicial judge's exit to avoid the hallway cameras, her head held high, though her cream-colored suit looked suddenly crumpled.

As Ryan was led past Claire, he stopped.

"Claire," he rasped, his eyes wide with a mixture of terror and desperation. "Please... don't do this. If the press gets hold of this, Whitmore Memorial will go under. The family name—"

Claire stood up slowly. She kept one hand on Grace’s shoulder and one hand on Lucas’s head.

She looked at the man she had loved for twelve years—the man whose meals she had cooked, whose grief she had held, whose life she had built—and realized he was nothing more than a hollow shell stuffed with cotton and pride.

"I don't care about your family name, Ryan," Claire said, her voice dropping into a register of absolute, quiet destruction. "I care about my children. And if I have to burn your hospital to the ground to keep them safe, I’ll hold the match myself."

Ryan was pulled away through the heavy oak doors.

Maya Torres walked up beside Claire, setting a gentle hand on her shoulder. "The judge just issued an emergency ex-parte order. Full temporary custody remains exclusively with you. A permanent restraining order has been issued against Ryan and Margaret Whitmore. They cannot come within one thousand feet of you, the children, or their school."

Claire nodded slowly, her hand resting on the back of Lucas's neck. "What happens next, Maya?"

"Next," Maya said, her eyes burning with tactical fire, "we go on the offensive. The Whitmores opened a box they thought they could control. Now we're going to show them what happens when the mother they tried to break decides to fight back."
