Chapter 4 - Born in the Shadows

The pain came in brutal, relentless waves, tearing through Eleanor’s battered body.
Outside, the wind howled through the forest, matching the agony echoing inside the stone cabin. Martha, despite her severe injuries, dragged herself to Eleanor's side, her rough hands wiping the cold sweat from the young woman's brow.
"Push, Eleanor! You must be strong now!" Martha urged, her voice steady despite her weakness. "Do not let them take this child from you! Fight!"
Eleanor screamed into a rolled-up piece of cloth, her eyes wide with fierce, motherly defiance. She thought of Daniel’s cold face as he cut the rope. She thought of Lady Genevieve’s cruel smile as she jumped from the carriage, saving herself while leaving her to shatter against the rocks. She channeled every drop of her hatred, every ounce of her broken trust, into the agonized push that tore through her body.
At dawn, as the first rays of gray light filtered through the cracked wooden shutters, a sharp, clear cry pierced the quiet forest.
Martha wrapped the newborn in a clean piece of flannel torn from an old blanket, her hands trembling with joy and exhaustion. She placed the tiny bundle into Eleanor’s waiting arms.
It was a boy. He had a tuft of jet-black hair and bright, perceptive blue eyes that mirrored his mother's.
"He is healthy, Eleanor... a miracle," Martha wept softly.

Eleanor stared down at her son, tears streaming down her pale, sweat-streaked face. The pain in her body vanished, replaced by an overwhelming, terrifying love. She pressed her lips against the baby's soft forehead.
"His name is Julian," Eleanor whispered, her voice laced with steel. "Julian Sterling. The true heir. He will grow up in the shadows, and when the time is right, he will tear down everything his father built."
