Chapter 3 - The Shadow of the Past

By morning, the estate was locked down. News reports on the muted television screens in Lorenzo's study were already spinning the narrative: Wife of Decorated Officer Abducted at O'Hare by Organized Crime Syndicate. Tyrell’s face was everywhere, playing the grieving, determined husband on live television.
Harper stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, watching Emma kick a red ball across the manicured lawn. Nero trotted beside her like a heavy, blue-gray guardian spirit, gently nudging the ball back to her whenever it rolled too far.
"He's good with her," Lorenzo said, walking into the room carrying two cups of black coffee. He handed one to Harper.
"Why are you doing this?" Harper asked directly, looking him in the eyes. "You’re a man people whisper about in terror. You run half this city’s docks. Why risk a war with the police department and the Marcone syndicate for a woman and a child you don't know?"
Lorenzo walked to his desk and picked up a framed photograph. It showed a younger Lorenzo standing beside a dark-haired woman and a small girl wearing a yellow sweater—the exact same color as the sweater Emma was wearing.
"My daughter, Sofia. She was six when the Marcone family decided I was becoming too powerful," Lorenzo said, his voice flat, devoid of emotion, which made the words even more chilling. "They bought off a team of cops—led by Tyrell Vance's mentor, Captain Miller. They ambushed our car. My wife died taking a bullet for Sofia. Sofia survived, but she never spoke another word. Two years later, her heart gave out from the trauma."
Harper swallowed hard, her eyes stinging with unbidden tears. "I'm so sorry..."
"Don't be," Lorenzo said sharply. "Be angry. The signal your daughter made at the airport—folding the thumb, closing the fingers—Sofia taught that to the children at her school before she died. When I saw Emma make that gesture, and when I saw Nero respond to her... I knew the universe wasn't giving me a coincidence. It was giving me a debt to settle."

Suddenly, the heavy double doors of the study burst open. Lorenzo’s chief of security, a scarred man named Marco, stepped in, his face pale.
"Boss. We have a problem," Marco said. "Tyrell isn't waiting for a warrant. He just tipped off the Federal Marshals that you're holding a kidnapped child. They're en route with a tactical team. And Marcone's men are trailing them."
