Chapter 8 - Healing in the Light

Three months later.

The summer sun shone brightly over a quiet, rolling estate in upstate New York—a property far removed from the dark alleys and political shadows of Chicago.

Harper sat on the wide wrap-around porch of the renovated farmhouse, sipping hot tea. The air smelled of pine and fresh clover. For the first time in nearly a year, the constant, knotting tension in her shoulders had entirely vanished.

In the meadow below the porch, Emma was running through the tall grass, laughing loudly. Beside her ran Nero, his heavy gray body moving with surprisingly agile bounds as he chased a yellow frisbee.

"She’s talking in full sentences now," Harper said as Lorenzo walked out onto the porch, carrying a tray of fresh lemonade.

Lorenzo smiled—a genuine, warm smile that transformed his entire face, erasing the cold gangster mask he had worn for a decade. He had officially stepped down from his syndicate operations, turning his legitimate shipping logistics businesses over to a board of directors and using his vast fortune to fund legal defense organizations for survivors of domestic abuse.

"I heard her this morning," Lorenzo said, sitting down in the wooden rocking chair next to her. "She was telling Nero a story about a dragon. I think she believes Nero is the dragon."

"He might as well be," Harper laughed softly, watching the giant dog gently drop the frisbee at Emma's feet and lie down so she could sit on his back like a horse. "He saved us, Lorenzo. You both did."

"No, Harper," Lorenzo said quietly, looking over at her with deep respect. "Nero and I just held the line. You were the one who carried the truth across eight months of hell. You saved yourself and your daughter."
