Chapter 5 - SHADOWS OF THE CLINIC

By 2:00 PM, the rain had begun to fall in earnest over New York City, drumming a relentless, dreary rhythm against the windows of the SUV as Frank drove Robert north toward Westchester County.
"Are you sure about this stop, Robert?" Frank asked, looking in the rearview mirror. "Eleanor wants you at her law office in an hour to prepare your testimony for tomorrow’s custody emergency hearing."
"We have two hours before that meeting, Frank," Robert replied, staring out at the blurred green trees lining the Hutchinson River Parkway. "Eleanor needs hard proof of how the tissue transfer happened. If we can prove in family court tomorrow that Sophia was born from an illegal, fraudulent surrogacy scheme orchestrated by Pendelton, the judge will tear up Michael Vance's legal guardianship papers on the spot."
Their destination was the St. Jude Reproductive Health Institute—a secluded, high-end private fertility clinic set back in the rolling hills of Scarsdale. It was the facility identified in Marina’s audio files where Sarah Vance had undergone the illegal embryo implantation six years ago.
The SUV pulled up to the stone driveway of the pristine, ultra-modern medical facility. Robert and Frank walked through the grand glass lobby, where soft ambient music played over hidden speakers.
Robert walked straight to the front reception desk. A young administrator looked up with a polite smile. "Welcome to St. Jude. How may I help you today?"
"I need to speak with Dr. Victor Mercer immediately," Robert said, his voice leaving no room for negotiation.
The receptionist’s smile flickered. "Dr. Mercer? I'm sorry, sir, but Dr. Mercer retired from private practice three years ago. He no longer sees patients here."
"I'm not a patient," Robert said, pulling out a corporate legal summons bearing the seal of the New York Supreme Court. "I am Robert Morgan. Dr. Mercer performed an illegal genetic transfer at this facility six years ago using tissue stolen from my late daughter. Either he comes down to talk to me right now, or my legal team and the State Medical Board will raid this building with a federal warrant in thirty minutes."
The receptionist turned deathly pale. "Please... wait here. I will call the Medical Director."
Five minutes later, they were escorted down a long, quiet basement hallway to a restricted archives wing. Standing inside a dimly lit office lined with locked file cabinets was Dr. Victor Mercer—a man in his late sixties with thinning white hair, nervous eyes, and hands that twitched incessantly at his sides.
When Mercer saw Robert enter the room, he backed up against his desk, clutching a pair of reading glasses against his lab coat.
"Mr. Morgan..." Mercer stammered, his voice trembling. "I... I read about your daughter's passing in the morning news. You have my deepest condolences, but I assure you, whatever you think happened here—"
"Save your breath, Mercer," Robert cut in, shutting the heavy office door behind him. Frank stood in front of the door, crossing his arms like an immovable wall. "I have the DNA sequencing. I have the child. I know that six years ago you implanted an embryo created from Marina Morgan's cryopreserved stem cells into a surrogate named Sarah Vance."
Dr. Mercer sank heavily into his leather chair, looking suddenly very old and crushed. He covered his face with his trembling hands. "I had no choice, Robert... You don't know what kind of man Arthur Pendelton is."
"Explain it to me," Robert demanded, stepping up to the desk and leaning over the nervous doctor. "Tell me everything, or I swear you will spend the rest of your life in a federal penitentiary."
Mercer let out a long, shuddering sob. "Seven years ago, I was deep in gambling debt. I owed over two million dollars to dangerous people in Atlantic City. Pendelton found out. He bought my debts, wiped them clean, and then he owned me."
"And what did he make you do?"
"He brought me a high-grade cryogenic storage canister from Mount Sinai," Mercer confessed, his voice barely above a whisper. "It contained genetic material belonging to Marina Morgan. Pendelton told me he needed a child created from that lineage. He said he was setting up a private trust for your family's future, but it had to be completely off the books because of complex corporate tax laws."
"And you believed him?!" Robert roared, slamming his fist onto the mahogany desk.
"I didn't care whether it was true or false!" Mercer wept out, cowering back. "I was terrified! If I said no, Pendelton threatened to leak my medical malpractice records and destroy my life! He provided the surrogate—Sarah Vance, a desperate, destitute woman from upstate who needed money for her medical bills. I performed the IVF procedure in secret right here in this basement lab."
Robert’s chest heaved with suppressed rage. "Where are the original clinical files, Mercer? The medical consent forms, the surrogacy contract, the logs of Pendelton's payments?"
Mercer reached into his desk drawer with shaking hands, pulled out a small steel key, and unlocked a heavy fireproof safe behind his chair. He pulled out a thick, faded blue medical binder labeled SUBJECT: VANCE / CASE #8841.
"It's all in here," Mercer said, handing the binder to Robert as if it were a burning piece of coal. "The original genetic matching logs, Sarah Vance’s medical intake forms, and the signed agreement where Arthur Pendelton personally signed as the financial guarantor for the entire procedure."
Robert grabbed the binder, flipping through the pages. There it was: Arthur Pendelton's signature, loud and clear, dated six years ago, right beneath Sarah Vance's signature.
"This binder proves the surrogacy was fraudulent, illegal, and conducted without my family's knowledge or consent," Robert said, looking down at the disgraced doctor with cold contempt. "You're going to testify in court tomorrow, Mercer."
"If I testify, I will lose my medical license! I could go to prison!" Mercer pleaded, tears streaming down his face.
"If you testify, Eleanor might be able to negotiate a plea deal for you," Robert replied coldly. "If you don't testify, I will personally see to it that you are indicted as an accomplice to child trafficking and corporate fraud by sunset tomorrow. Choice is yours, Doctor."
Mercer bowed his head, defeated. "I'll testify."
Robert clamped the binder under his arm and walked out of the office, Frank trailing right behind him.

As they walked out into the cold rainy afternoon air, Frank looked at Robert with deep respect. "That binder is the smoking gun, Robert. Pendelton's legal trap for tomorrow's custody hearing just evaporated."
"Not yet, Frank," Robert said, sliding into the back seat of the car. "Pendelton is desperate now. A cornered rat is at his most dangerous. He knows tomorrow is his last chance to drag Sophia away from me. Make sure security at the estate is doubled tonight. Nobody gets near my granddaughter."
