Chapter 9 - UNMASKING THE TRUTH

Two weeks later, autumn had fully embraced New York City. The trees along Central Park were ablaze with vibrant red, gold, and orange leaves under a crisp, clear blue sky.

The aftermath of Arthur Pendelton’s arrest had swept through Manhattan like a cleansing fire.

The District Attorney’s office had unsealed a massive federal indictment against Pendelton, Dr. Mercer, and six corrupt executives who had assisted in the surrogacy conspiracy. Pendelton faced life in prison for attempted murder, kidnapping, corporate fraud, and genetic tissue theft. Morgan Construction’s board of directors had unanimously voted Robert as Chairman for Life, and the stock had bounced back to an all-time high.

But inside the grand library of the Morgan estate in Long Island, corporate empires and stock prices didn't matter.

Robert sat in a soft leather armchair near the crackling fireplace. His left arm was in a black medical sling, recovering well from the graze wound. Beside him, sitting on a plush rug on the floor, was Sophia. She was wearing a warm yellow sweater and denim overalls, humming happily as she built a complex castle out of wooden building blocks.

A knock came at the door, and Eleanor Vance stepped inside, holding a thick, gold-embossed leather folder.

"Good afternoon, Robert," Eleanor said with a warm smile, stepping into the cozy room. "I have the final paperwork from the State Supreme Court."

Robert set his tea cup down on the side table. "Is it done?"

Eleanor opened the folder, placing three formal documents onto the table before him.

"Signed, sealed, and entered into the state registry an hour ago," Eleanor announced proudly. "The first document is the official Final Adoption Decree, making you Sophia's lawful adoptive father and legal guardian. The second is the Amended Birth Certificate, officially listing her legal name as Sophia Marina Morgan."

Robert reached out, his trembling fingers tracing the raised gold seal on the birth certificate.

Sophia Marina Morgan.

"And the third document?" Robert asked softly.

"The third document," Eleanor explained, "is the court's approval for the creation of the Marina Morgan Children’s Foundation. As per your instructions, the fifty million dollars from your private trust—along with all liquidated assets seized from Arthur Pendelton’s corporate forfeitures—have been transferred into the foundation's endowment."

Robert looked down at Sophia, who was carefully balancing a small wooden tower on top of her block castle.

"What will the foundation do, Grandpa?" Sophia asked, looking up with her big violet-blue eyes, having overheard her name.

Robert leaned down, placing his good hand gently on her shoulder. "The foundation is going to make sure that no little boy or girl ever has to be hungry, cold, or afraid on the street again, Sophia. It’s going to build shelters, provide warm food, doctors, and schools for children who need a home."

Sophia’s eyes lit up with incredible warmth. "Like the half piece of bread I gave you?"

"Just like that half piece of bread," Robert smiled, a lump forming in his throat. "You saved me that day, Sophia. Now we are going to save thousands more."

Frank stepped into the room, holding two long wool coats and a warm scarf. "The car is ready, Robert. The dedication ceremony starts in an hour."

"Let's go," Robert said, standing up.

Sophia scrambled to her feet, wiping her hands on her overalls, and proudly took Robert’s hand. They walked out of the mansion together, stepping into the crisp, golden afternoon air.
