Chapter 2 - Whispers in the Shadows

The safehouse was a secluded estate nestled deep within the pine woods of Upstate New York, untraceable by traditional surveillance. By midnight, after executing a carefully mapped series of decoy routes to slip past my mother’s watchers, I stepped into the warm entryway. Marcus stood guard at the perimeter, his silent nod confirming the perimeter was secure.

Inside, Lena sat in a plush armchair, wrapped in a heavy wool blanket. Grace was asleep in a bassinet nearby, her small chest rising and falling in steady rhythm.

"She's healthy," Lena said, her voice softer now, relieved. "The doctor Marcus brought said she’s just mildly undernourished, but fine otherwise."

I sat across from her, leaning forward with my hands clasped. "Tell me everything, Lena. I need every name, every location, every detail from the moment you vanished."

Lena took a slow breath, steadying her memory. "It began the night after you proposed. I was driving back from the gallery when a heavy SUV rammed my vehicle off the road. When I woke up, I was in a private clinic in the mountains of Vermont. There were no windows, only guards in unmarked uniforms."

"Evelyn’s private security unit," I muttered, my jaw tightening.

"When the doctor broke the news that I was pregnant, your mother visited me personally," Lena continued, a shudder running through her frame. "She told me that a artist's daughter with no lineage was an unacceptable match for the heir to Vance Enterprises. She told me she had already arranged the public narrative—a tragic accident, a charred vehicle, an unrecognizable body. She gave me a choice: stay hidden and keep the child, or attempt to run and lose both our lives."

"How did you escape?"

"A nurse," Lena smiled faintly through tears. "Her name was Sarah. She had a daughter Grace's age. Over two years, she helped me gather cash, falsified transfer papers, and finally cut the power to the security gate last week during a storm. I walked through the woods for twelve miles carrying Grace before we reached the highway."

I reached out, gently caressing Lena's cheek, running my thumb over the fading bruise. "Evelyn thought she killed you to protect her legacy. Instead, she just handed me the weapon I need to dismantle her."
