Chapter 9 - The Final Confrontation

Three days after the public arrest, the legal battle reached its swift conclusion. Denied bail due to flight risk and overwhelming evidence, Evelyn Vance sat behind a thick pane of bulletproof glass in the federal detention center's visitor room.
I sat down on the stool opposite her, picking up the receiver.
She looked small without her tailored dresses and diamond jewelry, wearing a stark orange jumpsuit, her hair unstyled. Yet her eyes still burned with malice.
"You think you've won, Daniel?" she hissed into the phone. "The board will vote you out. The stock price has plummeted fifty percent. You destroyed the family name for a common girl."
"Lena is worth more than every share of stock this family ever owned," I answered calmly. "And the board didn't vote me out, Mother. Yesterday morning, I initiated a complete buyout. Vance Enterprises is now a private entity, renamed Vance Foundation. We will be funding human rights initiatives and supporting victims of corporate abuse."
Evelyn struck the glass with her hand, a bitter, hysterical laugh escaping her lips. "You are weak! Just like your father! You let emotion blind you!"
"No," I said softly, looking at her with genuine pity for the first time in my life. "Father died broken because he let you control him. I broke free because I found something worth fighting for. You will spend the rest of your life in a federal facility, Evelyn. You will have plenty of time to reflect on what true power really is."
"Daniel! Wait!" she cried out as I stood up. "I am your mother!"

"A mother protects her family," I said, setting the receiver back on its cradle. "You only protected yourself."
I walked out of the visitor room, shutting the heavy iron door behind me, sealing away the dark shadow that had haunted my existence for far too long.
