Chapter 6 - Shadows over the Lake

Two months passed.
The Moretti estate had transformed into a completely different home.
Under my strict management, the cold, intimidating mansion had softened. The nursery was now filled with bright colors, soft lullabies, and the warm scent of baby powder. Mateo was thriving—he had gained four pounds, his colic was completely resolved, and his bright blue eyes—so much like his father's—followed me around the room whenever I walked in.
Dominic had changed too.
The terrifying mob boss who used to rule through sheer fear spent every evening sitting in the rocking chair in the nursery, holding his son, learning how to burp him, feed him, and read him bedtime stories under my quiet guidance.
The bond between Dominic and me had grown into something deep, powerful, and undeniable. It wasn't spoken out loud, but it was felt in every shared glance, every soft touch as we handed Mateo to each other, and every late-night conversation over tea in the quiet nursery.
One crisp autumn evening, while Mateo slept peacefully, Dominic walked into the nursery holding two mugs of hot chocolate.
He handed me one, sitting in the armchair beside my desk.
"You look tired, Hannah," he said gently, observing the faint shadows beneath my eyes.
"He's teething," I smiled, sipping the rich chocolate. "He was up every two hours last night. But his upper gums look good. He’s right on schedule."
Dominic looked at me, his expression softening into an intense, quiet affection. "You give everything to him, don't you?"
"He's easy to love, Dominic," I said softly, looking at the sleeping boy. "He brought me back to life. Before I came here, I was just existing. I was so afraid of loving another child because I thought losing them was inevitable."
Dominic reached across the small space between our chairs, his large, warm hand covering mine.
"You don't have to be afraid anymore, Hannah," Dominic said, his voice deep and sincere. "I know who I am, and I know the dark world I live in. But I swear to you, as long as I have breath in my body, no one will ever hurt you or Mateo again."
My heart hammered against my ribs, not with fear, but with a sudden, breathtaking heat. I looked into his dark eyes, seeing the absolute sincerity and fierce protectiveness lying beneath his tough exterior.
Before either of us could say another word, the mansion's heavy internal alarm klaxons began to wail.
Red emergency lights flashed through the window corridors.

Dominic stood up instantly, his hand flying to the concealed firearm at his hip.
Marco’s frantic voice exploded through the room's intercom speaker: "Boss! We have a perimeter breach! It's a strike team from the syndicate council—they've shut down the main power grid!"
