Chapter 1 - The Blueprint of Revenge

The kitchen radiator in the Queens walk-up let out a loud, metallic clank before resuming its dry, rhythmic hiss. Elena Petrova sat at the narrow laminate table, the golden-embossed wedding invitation lying flat between a box of off-brand macaroni and a half-empty jar of peanut butter.

She did not scream. She did not tear the heavy cardstock into ribbons. Instead, she picked up her phone, unlocked it with a calm, deliberate swipe, and dialed a number she hadn't needed to call in nearly four years.

"Whitcomb Legal Group. Partner desk," a crisp voice answered on the second ring.

"Jonathan, it's Elena," she said, her voice steady, stripped of the weariness she usually wore around the children.

A sharp intake of breath whistled through the receiver. "Elena? My God. We've tried reaching you through the old address three times this year. Your father's estate trust—"

"Can wait," Elena interrupted smoothly. "Right now, I need something else. I need the corporate asset filings for Sterling Capital Holdings, specifically the private acquisition addendums signed during the third quarter of 2023."

Jonathan hesitated, the rustle of papers coming through the line. "Elena, those assets are heavily shielded. Richard Sterling spent millions locking down his subsidiaries after the separation. Even with your maiden name on the original holding patents from your architecture days, accessing those files requires a high-level corporate injunction—"

"Which you are going to draft and file before sunset," she finished for him. "Jonathan, look at patent registry filing #884-Delta. The structural grid design for the New Jersey financial hub. Who holds the underlying intellectual property rights?"

A pause. Then a slow, astounded chuckle echoed through the phone. "You do. You never signed the secondary transfer waiver. You retained absolute master structural rights when you walked away."

"I signed nothing because Richard was in such a hurry to look like a self-made titan that he forgot to check the fine print of his own corporate consolidation," Elena said, her eyes fixed on the invitation. "He thinks I'm a broke, exhausted mother living off peanut butter and discount coupons. He invited me to his wedding to parade his wealth and humiliate me in front of high society."

May you like

"And you're going?" Jonathan asked, a note of grim amusement creeping into his tone.

"Oh, I'm going," Elena replied softly. "And I'm bringing the title deed to the ground he's standing on."
