Chapter 5 - The Corporate Execution

The silence in the St. Regis ballroom was absolute. You could hear the hum of the air conditioning vents overhead.
Richard let out a harsh, nervous laugh, though the color had completely drained from his face, leaving him the shade of stale parchment. "She's bluffing. It's a stunt. Security—someone get security and throw this lunatic out of here!"
Two massive security guards in black suits stepped forward from the side doors, their heavy footsteps echoing across the parquet floor. They reached for Elena’s arms.
She didn't flinch. She didn't raise her voice. She simply tapped her phone screen twice and pressed it against the nearest wall-mounted audio speaker system connected to the ballroom's DJ deck.
A clear, amplified phone call began to play through the overhead speakers.
"Whitcomb Legal Group, partner desk."
"Jonathan, it's Elena."
"Elena? My God... the corporate asset filings for Sterling Capital Holdings... private acquisition addendums..."
Richard lunged forward, his face twisted in pure, unadulterated panic. "Turn that off! Cut the power! CUT THE POWER!"
The security guards stopped dead in their tracks, frozen by the sound of Whitcomb’s voice—the most feared corporate litigator on the East Coast.
"...Jonathan," the recorded voice of Elena continued through the speakers, crisp and unhurried. "Look at patent registry filing #884-Delta. The structural grid design for the New Jersey financial hub. Who holds the underlying intellectual property rights?"
"You do. You never signed the secondary transfer waiver."
The recording clicked off.
The ballroom was heavier now, suffocatingly heavy. Every single investor, banker, and board member looked from the speakers to Richard, then to Elena.
Sir Reginald slowly stood up from his chair, his face dark with fury. "Richard... is this true? Did you build your entire flagship development on intellectual property you don't legally own?"
"It’s a technicality!" Richard screamed, his composure completely shattering as he pointed a shaking finger at Elena. "She’s my ex-wife! She signed away her rights in the initial separation agreement! She’s vindictive! She’s crazy!"
"I signed away my personal spousal support claims, Richard," Elena said, stepping right up to him until she was close enough to smell his expensive cologne mixed with cold sweat. "I never signed away my corporate assets. You were too busy bragging about your hostile takeovers to read the fine print of the intellectual property transfer forms you had me sign during our third year of marriage—forms you swore were just tax documents."
She reached into her folio and pulled out a single, perfectly crisp piece of paper bearing the golden seal of the New York State Supreme Court.
"This is an emergency injunction issued twenty minutes ago by Judge Abernathy," Elena announced, her voice ringing clear across the room. "Effective immediately, all accounts held by Sterling Capital Holdings are frozen. The Midtown construction site has been slapped with a red-tag stop-work order. And every single asset, subsidiary, and corporate holding in your portfolio has been placed under the direct receivership of Brutalist Holdings."

She looked at Amelia, then back at Richard.
"You wanted an audience for my humiliation, Richard," Elena whispered, her eyes burning with cold fire. "So I brought you one."
