Chapter 4 - The Parade of Pride

Richard’s champagne glass stopped halfway to his mouth.

For three seconds, his brain refused to process what his eyes were seeing. This wasn't the broken, exhausted woman who had dragged three crying toddlers out of his penthouse apartment three years ago. This was a predator dressed in silk and silence.

Amelia’s smile faltered, her fingers tightening around her bouquet until her knuckles turned white. "Richard... who is that? Is that a designer from Paris?"

"No," Richard muttered, his voice dropping an octave as cold dread began to pool in his stomach. "That's... that's Elena."

Elena stopped three rows from the front, right beside where Richard’s primary financial backers—including senior partners from Vaughn & Co. and the international banking syndicate—were seated. She didn't look at them. She looked straight at Richard.

Her lips curved into a smile that didn't reach her eyes. It was a terrifying smile.

Richard recovered quickly, his arrogance rushing back like a tide trying to cover a receding shore. He handed his champagne flute to a passing waiter, adjusted his lapels, and stepped forward, his voice carrying clearly across the silent ballroom.

"Elena! I wasn't actually sure you’d make it," Richard said, projecting warmth that sounded like breaking glass. "I know travel from... wherever you're staying these days... can be quite a burden."

Laughter rippled through the front rows. A few society wives covered their mouths with manicured fingers, enjoying the sport.

Elena didn't blink. "It wasn't a problem at all, Richard. I always make time to inspect properties I'm about to repossess."

The laughter died instantly.

Richard’s smile twitched. "Repossess? Still joking, I see. Well, I’m glad you’re here. I wanted you to see that life moves on. That some people are built for success, and others..." He gestured vaguely toward her dress with a condescending sweep of his hand. "Well, some people are better suited for the sidelines."

"You always did have a terrible eye for structural integrity, Richard," Elena said smoothly, taking another step closer. "You look at the facade and assume the foundation is solid. But a building only stands as long as the legal permits are valid."

Amelia stepped forward, her eyes narrowing. "Listen to me, you little—"

"Quiet, Amelia," Elena said, her voice dropping to a register so cold and authoritative that the bride actually stepped back, silenced by pure instinct.

Richard’s face flushed dark crimson. "Get out. I invited you here to watch me celebrate, not to make a scene in front of my investors."

"Your investors?" Elena tilted her head, turning to face the cluster of terrified bankers seated nearby. "Gentlemen, before you finish your champagne, let me ask you a simple question. Have any of you actually reviewed the master title deeds for the Sterling Financial Tower under construction in Midtown?"

Sir Reginald Vance, the primary venture capitalist backing Richard’s entire portfolio, leaned forward, his brow furrowed. "What are you talking about? Sterling Capital holds the primary lease."

"Sterling Capital holds a sub-lease," Elena corrected, pulling a thick, cream-colored document from her sleek leather folio. "Signed by Richard in his haste to secure capital back in 2022. But the underlying architectural IP, the zoning permits, and the primary land trust are registered under a private entity called Brutalist Holdings LLC."

She paused, letting the silence settle over the room like falling snow.

"And who owns Brutalist Holdings?" she asked softly. "Me."
