Chapter 6 - Ambush at Oak Ridge

Oak Ridge Cemetery in late afternoon was a silent landscape of snow-draped oak trees, gray granite headstones, and long shadows cast by the setting sun.

A single black armored SUV pulled up the narrow asphalt drive, stopping near a simple headstone marked: ARTHUR VANCE — BELOVED FATHER & HONEST MAN.

Clara stepped out, wrapped in her warm wool coat, holding a bouquet of fresh white lilies. Jax walked beside her, his ears alert, scanning the silent rows of headstones. Two of Cassian’s security operatives stepped out behind them, maintaining a thirty-yard distance to give her privacy while keeping their eyes on the tree line.

Clara knelt in the snow before her father's grave, setting the lilies down against the cold stone. Tears spilled silently over her cheeks, but for the first time in two years, they were not tears of despair.

"I'm safe now, Dad," Clara whispered, pressing her fingers against his carved name. "Helen can't hurt me anymore. Cassian found me. He kept his promise to you."

Suddenly, Jax let out a low, dangerous growl, his hackles raising along his spine.

Before the two security operatives could draw their weapons, four black vans burst through the cemetery’s iron gates, their tires spinning violently on the snow.

Automatic gunfire shattered the quiet afternoon air.

"Down! Get down!" the lead operative yelled, tackling Clara behind a heavy granite mausoleum as bullets chipped away the marble corners, throwing concrete dust into the freezing air.

Jax barked furiously, standing over Clara, his body a living shield between her and the incoming lead.

From the lead van, Dominic Marcone stepped out, wearing a heavy fur coat, holding a submachine gun. Ten heavily armed men poured out behind him, flanking the mausoleum from both sides.

"Bring the girl to me!" Dominic screamed over the sound of gunfire. "Kill the guards! Kill the dog!"

The two operatives returned fire with disciplined precision, taking down two of Marcone's men, but they were severely outnumbered. Bullets peppered the marble wall behind Clara, wood splinters and stone chips flying through the air like shrapnel.

Clara hugged Jax tight, her heart hammering against her ribs, but she did not scream. She refused to give Dominic Marcone the satisfaction of her fear.

"Marcone!" a voice boomed across the snowy graveyard—a voice that sounded like thunder rolling over frozen mountains.

Dominic turned his head toward the main entrance.

A massive, heavy-duty armored convoy—six vehicles wide—had smashed through the cemetery’s rear perimeter fence. Dozens of heavily armed men in dark tactical gear poured out, establishing an impenetrable wall of firepower around Marcone’s crew.

At the center of the line stood Cassian Ror.

He walked forward through the deep snow, unbothered by the whistling bullets, holding a heavy custom sidearm in his right hand. His face was a mask of cold, terrifying vengeance.

"You brought war to a sacred place, Dominic," Cassian said, his voice carrying clearly over the dying gunfire. "You targeted Arthur’s daughter at his own grave."

Dominic’s men panicked, realizing they had been completely surrounded by Cassian’s elite forces. Several dropped their weapons immediately, raising their hands in the air.

Dominic, wild-eyed and desperate, grabbed one of his falling men and aimed his weapon directly at Cassian. "I’ll kill you, Ror! I’ll burn your whole empire down!"

Cassian didn't even flinch. He didn't raise his gun.

"Jax," Cassian called out softly. "Take him."

With a fierce, terrifying roar, the war dog burst from behind the mausoleum like an arrow shot from a bow. Jax covered thirty yards of deep snow in three seconds, launching his ninety-pound frame through the air and slamming directly into Dominic Marcone’s chest.

Dominic’s weapon flew into the snow as he hit the ground with a sickening thud. Jax pinned the syndicate boss to the frozen earth, his jaws locked onto Marcone’s heavy leather collar, growling inches from his throat.

"Don't move," Cassian said quietly, stepping up to the fallen mobster and placing the barrel of his gun lightly against Marcone’s forehead. "If you breathe too hard, my dog won't wait for my command."

Dominic lay weeping in the snow, his former bravado completely shattered. "Please... Cassian... please... it was Helen! She made the deal!"

"Helen is going to prison for twenty years," Cassian said coldly. "You are going to a deep, dark place where the federal prosecutors will spend the next six months tearing your organization apart piece by piece."

Cassian turned his head toward the mausoleum. "Clara. Are you hurt?"

Clara stepped out from the shadows, her coat covered in snow, but her eyes bright, clear, and unyielding. She walked over to Cassian, looking down at the squirming mob boss, then looked up at the man who had saved her life twice in forty-eight hours.

"I'm unhurt, Cassian," Clara said softly. "Thanks to you. And thanks to Jax."

May you like

Cassian whistled softly. Jax released Marcone's collar, trotting back to Clara's side and pressing his head against her hand.

"Take them all away," Cassian commanded his operatives. "Clean this place. Arthur deserves his peace."
