Chapter 8 - The Trial of the Tyrants

Six months later, summer had arrived in the city.

Inside the packed main courtroom of the U.S. District Court, a three-week trial was finally coming to its dramatic conclusion.

Helen Vance sat at the defense table, wearing an orange prison jumpsuit, her hair completely gray, her face lined with bitterness and age. Beside her sat Dominic Marcone, dressed in heavy restraints, flanked by four federal marshals.

Judge Thomas Reynolds, a formidable magistrate known for his unyielding stance on corruption, looked over his gold-rimmed glasses at the jury foreman.

"Has the jury reached a unanimous verdict?" Judge Reynolds asked.

"We have, Your Honor," the foreman replied, standing straight.

The courtroom fell into an absolute, breathless hush. Clara sat in the front row of the gallery, flanked by Cassian on her right and Victoria Sterling on her left.

"On Count One, aggravated human trafficking and forced labor regarding Helen Vance—we find the defendant GUILTY."

"On Count Two, massive financial fraud and forgery—we find the defendant GUILTY."

"On Count Three, felony child abuse and assault—we find the defendant GUILTY."

Helen collapsed back into her chair, burying her face in her manicured hands, weeping bitterly as the verdicts continued to roll in.

"On Count Four, federal racketeering and attempted murder regarding Dominic Marcone—we find the defendant GUILTY."

Judge Reynolds slammed his heavy wooden gavel down, the sharp strike echoing across the packed courtroom like a final sentence handed down by destiny itself.

"Helen Vance, for your heinous, systemic cruelty against a vulnerable child, and your extensive financial crimes, I sentence you to twenty-eight years in federal prison without the possibility of parole."

"Dominic Marcone, for your leadership of a criminal enterprise and attempted murder, I sentence you to life imprisonment without parole."

Cheers erupted from the gallery. Reporters scribbled frantically in their notebooks as marshals cuffed Helen and Marcone, dragging them out through the rear security doors. Helen looked back one last time, her eyes locking onto Clara, hoping to find a glimpse of pity or regret.

Clara merely looked back at her with calm, absolute indifference.

The nightmare was officially, legally, and permanently over.
