Chapter 14 - The Boardroom and the Battlefield

Before Clare could even plan a trip to Chicago, the battle moved to her own professional backyard.

On Thursday morning, Vanguard Risk Holdings’ global compliance committee called an emergency meeting. As Clare walked into the boardroom, she was met by the grim faces of the managing partners and the firm’s general counsel.

"Clare," began Harrison Cole, the senior founding partner. "We’ve received an anonymous whistleblower report regarding your financial disclosures during your transition from our Chicago office to New York. The report alleges that you used proprietary risk algorithms to undervalue your personal assets during a highly contested legal dispute, potentially exposing Vanguard to regulatory liability."

Clare felt the blood rush to her ears, but she kept her composure. She knew this was Arthur’s work. He was trying to ruin her career, to strip away her financial independence so she would be forced to settle on his terms.

"This is a coordinated personal attack, Harrison," Clare said, her voice echoing off the glass walls of the boardroom. "The 'whistleblower' is my ex-husband, Arthur Vance. He is currently attempting to reopen our custody agreement. He is using fabricated claims of financial fraud to pressure me into giving up our children."

"Fabricated or not, Clare, the allegations are highly specific," the general counsel noted, sliding a printout of Clare’s private investment ledger across the table. "This document contains internal data from our risk valuation models. How did your ex-husband obtain this?"

Clare’s heart sank. She recognized the ledger. It was a draft she had worked on from her home laptop in Lakeview years ago. Arthur must have installed spyware on her personal device before she fled.

"He hacked my personal computer before I left Chicago," Clare explained, her eyes flashing with cold anger. "He has been holding onto this data, waiting for the perfect moment to weaponize it against me and this firm."

Harrison Cole sighed, rubbing his temples. "Clare, we value your work immensely. You’ve turned our regional risk division around. But we cannot have our Managing Director embroiled in a public corporate espionage and custody scandal. Until our internal audit team clears your name and confirms no proprietary data was leaked to outside competitors, we are placing you on administrative leave."

"Administrative leave?" Clare stood up, her hands flat on the table. "If you do this, you are giving him exactly what he wants. You are validating his terror tactics."

"We are protecting the firm, Clare," Harrison said quietly. "Please. Take some time. Resolve this. If you are innocent, your position will be waiting for you. But for now, we need your credentials."

Clare walked out of the office building onto the bustling streets of Manhattan, her mind racing. She had been stripped of her authority, her shield. But as she looked up at the sky, she felt a strange, liberating shift.

Arthur had taken her job, but he had also removed her shackles. She no longer had to worry about corporate decorum. She could now fight him with the same dirty, relentless tactics he used.

She called Julian. "Pack a bag, Julian. We’re going to Chicago tonight."
