Chapter 19 - The House of Cards Collapses
Judge Ross looked down at Clare, his expression softening slightly.
"Ms. Coleman," the judge said. "This court finds that the petitioner’s motions were filed in bad faith, with the primary intent of committing financial fraud and avoiding fiduciary accountability. Not only is the motion for emergency custody denied, but I am also issuing a permanent, non-expiring protective order for you, your children, and your family. Mr. Vance is to have zero contact, direct or indirect, with Noah and Lily."
A quiet gasp of relief escaped Clare's lips. David reached over, his hand wrapping around hers, his grip tight and warm.
"Furthermore," Judge Ross continued, looking back at Arthur with pure disgust. "I am referring these financial records directly to the United States Attorney for the Eastern District of New York and the Northern District of Illinois for immediate criminal investigation into interstate wire fraud and embezzlement. Mr. Vance, you are ordered to surrender your passport to the court bailiff immediately."
Arthur stood up, his face pale, his hands shaking. "Your Honor! This is a conspiracy! She stole those files! She’s trying to ruin me!"
"Sit down, Mr. Vance," the bailiff ordered, stepping forward and placing a firm hand on Arthur’s shoulder.
As Clare, David, and Marcus walked out of the courtroom into the bright afternoon sun of Foley Square, the weight of a ten-year nightmare finally lifted from Clare’s shoulders. She felt light, as if she could float above the city streets.
By Monday, the fallout was complete.
Vanguard Risk Holdings’ internal audit team cleared Clare of all allegations, realizing that the "whistleblower" report was a malicious attempt at corporate sabotage. Harrison Cole personally called Clare to apologize, offering her a seat on the firm’s executive board in addition to her role as Managing Director.
