Chapter 17 - The Confrontation in the Grey

Clare stood her ground, her hand gripping the strap of her bag containing the hard drive.

"You look tired, Arthur," she said, her voice surprisingly calm. "The years haven't been kind to you. Or to your family's balance sheet."

Arthur’s smirk vanished, replaced by a cold, dangerous glare. "You think you're clever, hiding out in your little Brooklyn brownstone with your academic boyfriend and your useless brother. But you forgot who built you, Clare. You forgot that everything you have—your career, your children, your freedom—exists because I allowed it."

"You allowed nothing," Clare said, taking a step toward the French doors. "I survived you. And my children are thriving because they are away from your poison."

"Thriving?" Arthur laughed, a harsh, humorless sound. "Noah is a broken child. He’s a witness to a 'crime' that never happened. And when I get him back in court, my lawyers will show the world that you are an unstable mother who forced her son to lie to escape a marriage she couldn't handle."

"I have the ledger, Arthur," Clare said, tapping her bag. "I have the records of the twelve-million-dollar trust fund. I know you’ve been embezzling from Noah’s inheritance to pay off Vance Enterprises’ debts. That’s why you want him back. Because on his eighth birthday next month, the trustees are scheduled to conduct an independent audit of the fund. If Noah isn't under your legal guardianship, you lose your status as trustee, and your entire company collapses."

Arthur’s face went pale, his eyes darting to the open wall safe. He took a sudden, violent step toward her, his hand reaching for her arm. "Give me the bag, Clare."

"No," Clare said, stepping back.

Before Arthur could grab her, the French doors flew open. Julian stepped into the room, holding a heavy iron tire iron he had taken from the rental car. His face was set in a mask of absolute protective fury.

"Step away from my sister, Arthur," Julian said, his voice low and vibrating with menace.

Arthur looked at Julian, then at Clare, realizing he was outnumbered and outmatched in the physical space. He slowly stepped back, raising his hands in a mocking gesture of surrender.

"You can take the files, Clare," Arthur whispered, a sickening smile returning to his lips. "But it won't save you. My lawyers have already filed the motion in New York. The hearing is tomorrow morning. By the time you fly back, Judge Ross will have already signed the emergency custody order. You’re too late."

"We'll see about that," Clare said. She and Julian backed out of the French doors into the cold Chicago night, running toward the waiting car.
