Chapter 1 - The Sanctuary of Shadows

The heavy door of the black Mercedes-Maybach pulled shut with a soft, vacuum-sealed thud, instantly severing the violent roar of the storm outside. Inside, the atmosphere was thick with the scent of high-grade leather, expensive sandalwood cologne, and a silence so profound it made Aria’s ears ring.

Aria collapsed onto the floorboards of the spacious passenger cabin, shivering uncontrollably. She curled into a tight ball, her ruined silver dress soaking into the deep pile carpet. Her breath hitched in ragged, desperate gasps as she pressed her forehead against the back of the front passenger seat, terrified that at any moment, the doors would fly open and Victoria’s security detail would drag her back to the mansion.

"Drive," a voice commanded from the shadows beside her.

It was a baritone voice, smooth like crushed velvet but carrying the absolute, unyielding authority of a man accustomed to commanding empires. It wasn't loud, yet it resonated through the enclosed space with an icy finality.

The driver, a burly man in a dark suit whose eyes reflected in the rearview mirror, didn't hesitate. He shifted the vehicle into drive, and the powerful engine surged forward, tires gripping the wet asphalt as the car accelerated away from the private road of the Montgomery estate. Through the tinted, rain-streaked glass, Aria watched the flashlights of her pursuers fade into distant, meaningless pinpricks of light before being swallowed entirely by the Nevada night.

For nearly ten minutes, neither of them spoke. The only sound was the rhythmic, muted sweep of the windshield wipers and the soft hiss of the tires against the flooded highway. Aria gradually pulled herself up onto the leather seat, keeping her body pressed tightly against the opposite door, trying to occupy as little space as possible. She was acutely aware of the mud she was tracking onto the flawless interior, the blood from her scraped ankles staining the pristine leather.

"You can stop trembling," the man said quietly, his eyes remaining fixed on the tablet computer glowing in his lap. "You are out of their reach."

Aria looked at him through the damp curtain of her hair. The soft ambient lighting of the cabin illuminated his profile. He was strikingly handsome, with a sharp, aristocratic jawline, a straight nose, and dark hair styled with clinical precision. He looked to be in his early thirties, possessing an aura of absolute composure that bordered on predatory. This was Ethan Cross, a billionaire financier whose reputation in the corporate world was that of a ruthless kingmaker—though Aria had no idea who he was yet.

"Thank you," Aria whispered, her voice cracking, raw from the screams that had been trapped in her throat. She gripped the torn fabric of her bodice, trying to cover the exposed skin where the old man, Mr. Vance, had torn her dress. "Thank you for stopping. If you hadn't..."

"I didn't stop out of charity," Ethan interrupted, finally turning his head to look at her. His gaze was sharp, analytical, assessing her like a complex contract. He took in the bruise swelling across her left cheek, the tattered state of her clothing, and the fierce, burning survival instinct still visible behind her tear-filled eyes. "I stopped because a woman standing in the middle of a deserted highway in a torrential storm usually means an inconvenience is approaching. I preferred to control the inconvenience."

He reached into a side compartment and pulled out a plush, dark gray cashmere blanket, tossing it casually across the seat into her lap.

"Wrap yourself in that. My driver, Marcus, is taking us to my private residence in the city. You will be provided with medical attention, clean clothes, and a secure room. Tomorrow, you will tell me who is hunting you, and why they believe they own you."

Aria pulled the blanket tightly around her shoulders, the warmth of the fabric immediately fighting the deep, bone-chilling cold that had settled into her limbs. "My name is Aria," she managed to say, her chin trembling. "Aria Montgomery."

Ethan’s eyes narrowed slightly, a microscopic flash of recognition crossing his features before his expression returned to a blank canvas. "Montgomery. As in Montgomery Logistics?"

May you like

"Yes," she whispered, looking down at her bare, blood-stained feet. "Victoria Montgomery is my stepmother. She... she tried to sell me tonight. To save the company."

Ethan leaned back against the headrest, a cold, humorless smile playing at the corners of his lips. "Victoria is a fool. She traded a valuable asset for a temporary line of credit with a dying dinosaur like Vance. A very poor business decision." He turned his eyes back to his tablet. "Rest now, Miss Montgomery. The storm cannot touch you inside my walls."
