Chapter 2 - The Fortress of Glass

The car passed through a set of massive, biometric security gates and wound up a steep, private driveway lined with towering pines before coming to a halt beneath the concrete canopy of a brutalist, ultra-modern mansion. The structure was a towering fortress of black steel and floor-to-ceiling glass, architectural genius perched on the cliffs overlooking the city lights below.

Marcus opened Aria’s door, offering her a respectful, steadying hand as she stepped out. Her legs threatened to buckle beneath her, the adrenaline that had sustained her through the escape finally evaporating, leaving behind a crushing, paralyzing exhaustion.

Before her feet could touch the cold stone of the driveway, Ethan stepped beside her. Without asking for permission, he swept her up into his arms, lifting her effortlessly against his chest. Aria gasped, her hands instinctively grabbing his shoulders for balance. His chest was solid, warm, and completely steady.

"You are losing blood from your feet," Ethan said flatly, walking through the massive glass front doors that slid open automatically at his approach. "There is no need to ruin my entryway."

He carried her through a vast, minimalist foyer into a sprawling master guest suite on the main floor. He placed her gently onto a large, white leather chaise lounge. Within seconds, an elderly woman in a crisp housekeeper’s uniform entered the room, followed by a middle-aged man carrying a medical bag.

"This is Mrs. Higgins, my estate manager, and Dr. Evans," Ethan announced, stepping back and folding his arms. "Dr. Evans will treat your wounds. Mrs. Higgins will provide you with anything you require. I expect you to be functional by nine o'clock tomorrow morning."

"Wait," Aria called out as he turned to leave. She looked up at him, her heart hammering against her ribs. "Who are you? Why are you helping me?"

Ethan paused at the threshold, his silhouette framed by the sharp lines of the modern architecture. He looked back over his shoulder, his dark eyes glinting in the soft light.

"I am Ethan Cross," he said smoothly. "And as for why I am helping you... let's just say I have a profound dislike for Victoria Montgomery, and I always enjoy disrupting her inventory."

With that, he disappeared down the hallway, leaving Aria with the medical team. Dr. Evans worked quickly and gently, cleaning the deep cuts on her soles and ankles, applying a soothing antiseptic ointment before wrapping them in clean white bandages. He also examined the bruise on her face, applying a cool gel to reduce the swelling.

"You're a very lucky young lady," Dr. Evans said kindly as he packed his instruments. "Mr. Cross’s private security network is impenetrable. No one can enter this mountain without his explicit clearance. You are perfectly safe here."

Once the doctor left, Mrs. Higgins helped Aria into a luxurious, warm rainfall shower, washing away the mud, the rain, and the lingering, disgusting touch of Mr. Vance. She provided Aria with a pair of soft silk pajamas and a warm bowl of chicken broth.

As Aria finally crawled into the massive, king-sized bed, the silk sheets felt like heaven against her battered skin. For the first time in years, since her father had passed away and left her at the mercy of Victoria, Aria did not lock her door out of fear. She fell into a deep, dreamless sleep, guarded by the walls of the man they called the Kingmaker.
