Chapter 1 - The Trap Closes

The air in the hospital room turned to ice.

Julian froze, his hand still clamping the pen between my limp fingers. Victoria gasped, frantically trying to pull Julian’s heavy overcoat tighter around her bare body. Eleanor spun around, her scowl shifting into a mask of aristocratic outrage.

"Who invited you in here?" Eleanor demanded, stepping forward to block Sarah Thorne’s path. "This is a private family matter. Get out before I have security throw you into the street!"

Sarah didn't flinch. At forty-two, wearing a tailored navy suit with her sharp dark hair pinned back, my lead attorney was a legendary litigator who had dismantled three Fortune 500 cartels. She didn't look at Eleanor. She looked straight at the high-definition lens of her iPad, which was already streaming and recording.

"Ms. Eleanor Vance," Sarah said, her voice smooth, measured, and dangerously calm. "I would suggest you take your hand off my client's blanket immediately. You are currently trespassing in a private medical suite registered exclusively under Genevieve Vance's personal estate."

"I am her husband's mother!" Eleanor spat.

"And you are currently on a live, encrypted audiovisual feed being monitored by Detective Marcus Vance of the Chicago Police Department's Special Victims Unit," Sarah replied, holding up her phone. "Along with two uniformed officers standing directly outside that door."

Julian’s face drained of color. His knuckles went white as he dropped the pen onto the bedsheets. "Sarah... wait. This is a misunderstanding. Genevieve is emotionally unstable. She just had a traumatic birth—"

"I have been listening to the entire exchange through an open line for the last twenty-two minutes, Julian," Sarah interrupted, stepping past Eleanor as if the older woman were invisible. "I recorded you bringing an unclothed woman into a post-operative room. I recorded Eleanor threatening to declare Genevieve incompetent. I recorded the physical assault on my client, and I recorded the sound of Genevieve’s newborn daughter crying as a result of that blow."

"That's a lie!" Eleanor shrieked, though her voice wobbled. "She fell! She's confused from the anesthesia!"

Sarah reached down beneath the edge of my pillow and pulled out my iPhone. The red recording bar was still glowing brightly. She tapped a button, touched the screen, and aimed a portable bluetooth speaker at the room.

Eleanor’s voice blasted through the small hospital room with horrifying clarity:

“A helpless woman with postpartum confusion can’t run a company.”

CRACK.

The sickening sound of the slap echoed against the sterile walls, followed instantly by Hazel’s sharp, terrified wail.

“Who will believe a paralyzed woman?”

Victoria let out a small, pathetic squeak and shrank behind Julian. Julian looked like he was going to vomit right onto the linoleum floor.

"Under Illinois law," Sarah said, her voice dropping into a register of absolute, lethal authority, "coerced signature, felony extortion, aggravated domestic battery, and child endangerment are non-bailable offences when committed in a medical facility. Officers?"

The heavy wooden door pushed open. Two broad-shouldered uniformed officers stepped inside, accompanied by a sharp-eyed detective in a gray suit.

"Julian Vance, Eleanor Vance," Detective Marcus said, pulling two pairs of steel handcuffs from his belt. "Place your hands behind your backs."

"You can't do this!" Julian yelled, backing away toward the window. "I am the Chief Operating Officer of Vance Development! I have rights!"

"You had rights," Sarah corrected smoothly, pulling a crisp white envelope from her leather briefcase and dropping it onto Julian’s chest. "As of four minutes ago, the board of Vance Development convened via emergency teleconference. Using her 100% voting ownership, Genevieve Vance officially terminated your employment for cause, revoked your signature authority, and locked all corporate accounts."

Julian stared at the paper in absolute horror. The empire he had planned to steal had evaporated before he could even touch it.

"And as for you, Ms. Victoria Sterling," Sarah added, turning her sharp gaze to the shivering woman hiding in the coat. "Indecent exposure in a neonatal ward carries a mandatory registry requirement. Officers, please assist Ms. Sterling in finding some hospital scrubs before you process her at the 1st District precinct."

As the handcuffs clicked around Julian’s wrists, he finally looked at me. His face wasn't arrogant anymore; it was filled with a pathetic, desperate terror.

"Genevieve... please," Julian whimpered, his eyes pleading. "Think of Hazel! We can talk about this! I love you!"

May you like

I looked at the man I had built up for eleven years. I looked at the red smudge of lipstick on his shirt collar, then down at my sleeping baby girl, whom Sarah was now gently rocking in her bassinet.

"I am thinking of Hazel," I said, my voice cold, steady, and entirely free of tears. "Which is why you will never see either of us ever again."
