Chapter 4 - The Custody Hearing

On Thursday morning at 9:00 AM, Division 4 of the Cook County Family Court was packed with reporters, observers, and legal teams.

Julian Vance sat at the petitioner's table wearing a sharp gray suit, looking like a grieving, concerned father. Beside him sat his uncle, Arthur Vance, a slick defense attorney with slicked-back hair and a golden watch. Eleanor sat in the front row of the gallery, wearing a pearls and a black fur coat, dabbing her dry eyes with a lace handkerchief for the benefit of the news cameras.

Judge Evelyn Vance (no relation), a stern woman sixty years old with zero tolerance for melodrama, presided from the bench.

"Mr. Vance," Judge Evelyn said, turning to Arthur Vance. "You have requested an emergency ex-parte order granting full legal and physical custody of Hazel Vance to your client, Julian Vance. On what grounds?"

Arthur Vance stood up, adjusting his buttoned jacket. "Your Honor, my client is heartbroken. His wife, Genevieve Vance, suffered a catastrophic medical emergency following childbirth. She is currently completely paralyzed from the waist down, suffering from severe postpartum psychosis, and residing in an isolated estate where she is refusing visitors."

"That is a lie!" Sarah Thorne’s voice rang out as she stood up at the respondent's table across the aisle.

"Ms. Thorne," the judge warned, raising a hand. "You will have your turn."

Arthur Vance continued smoothly, holding up a stack of medical papers. "We have affidavits from two independent medical consultants stating that a woman in Ms. Vance’s physical condition cannot safely lift, feed, or protect a four-day-old infant. Furthermore, she has recently used her corporate power to fire my client without cause, demonstrating severe emotional instability."

"We are simply asking for temporary emergency custody," Julian added, standing up with an expression of tragic devotion. "I want to bring my daughter home to a safe, loving environment while my wife receives the psychiatric help she so desperately needs."

In the gallery, Eleanor let out a soft, practiced sob into her handkerchief.

Judge Evelyn turned her gaze to Sarah. "Ms. Thorne. Where is your client?"

"My client is currently attending via high-definition secure feed from her residence, Your Honor," Sarah replied, touching her laptop screen.

A large seventy-inch monitor mounted on the courtroom wall flickered to life.

The live video showed the sunlit library of the Lake Forest estate.

I was sitting in a high-backed armchair, wearing a tailored cream blazer, my dark hair styled, holding four-day-old Hazel gently against my chest. I looked serene, healthy, and entirely in control.

Julian’s mouth fell open. Eleanor stopped pretending to cry and stared at the screen in disbelief.

"Good morning, Your Honor," I said, my voice echoing crystal-clear through the courtroom speakers.

"Good morning, Mrs. Vance," Judge Evelyn replied, leaning forward. "Mr. Vance’s counsel claims you are physically incapable of caring for your daughter and are mentally incapacitated."

"I am aware of Mr. Vance's claims, Your Honor," I replied calmly. "And with the court's permission, I would like to offer two pieces of evidence in response."

"Proceed," the judge directed.

I leaned forward, handed Hazel gently to Nurse Clara, who was standing just off-camera, and then placed my hands on the arms of my chair.

In full view of the entire courtroom, I stood up.

I didn't use a walker. I didn't use a cane. I stood tall, straight, and unwavering, taking three deliberate, steady steps forward toward the camera until my face filled the screen.

The courtroom gasped.

Julian turned white as a sheet. Arthur Vance frantically shuffled through his papers, looking completely lost.

"As you can see, Your Honor," I said smoothly, "my physical recovery is progressing far ahead of schedule. But more importantly, regarding my husband’s character and his sudden desire to 'protect' our daughter... I ask my attorney to submit Exhibit A."

Sarah stepped forward, handing a thumb drive to the court bailiff.

"Your Honor," Sarah announced loudly, "this is an unedited audio and video recording taken in my client's hospital room six hours after childbirth. It features Julian Vance, Eleanor Vance, and Victoria Sterling."

Arthur Vance jumped to his feet, panicking. "Objection! Objection, Your Honor! This feed is unauthenticated and violated my client's privacy!"

"Overruled," Judge Evelyn snapped, her eyes fixed on the screen. "Play the file."

The courtroom went dead silent as the video flared to life on the monitors.

The whole room watched in horror as Julian entered the hospital room, followed by his naked mistress in an overcoat. They watched Eleanor throw the legal papers across my bed. They heard Eleanor’s cruel voice sneer, “Who will believe a paralyzed woman?” and watched her slap me across the face while my newborn daughter cried out in terror.

When the video finished, the silence in the courtroom was suffocating.

Judge Evelyn lowered her glasses. Her face was a mask of dark, terrifying fury. She looked down at Julian Vance as if he were a cockroach crawling across her bench.

"Mr. Vance," Judge Evelyn said, her voice dropping into a register that made the entire room shiver. "You came into my courtroom today claiming to be a concerned father."

Julian couldn't speak. He trembled violently, clutching the edge of his table.

"I am denying your petition for custody with prejudice," Judge Evelyn declared, her gavel coming down with a thunderous CRACK. "Furthermore, I am issuing an immediate, permanent restraining order prohibiting you, Eleanor Vance, and Victoria Sterling from coming within one thousand yards of Genevieve Vance or Hazel Vance."

She looked up at the court bailiffs standing by the door.

"Bailiffs," the judge ordered coldly. "Remand Julian Vance and Eleanor Vance into custody immediately. The federal prosecutor's office has just issued arrest warrants for wire fraud, perjury, and child endangerment. Get them out of my courtroom."
