Chapter 8 - A New Chapter

Six months after that fateful night in the hospital, the Lake Forest estate was filled with the warm, golden light of late summer.
The rose gardens were in full bloom, casting sweet scents across the wide green lawns. The quiet hum of cicadas echoed through the trees, and the blue water of Lake Michigan sparkled in the distance.
I sat on a lounge chair on the back stone patio, wearing a simple white summer dress.
In my arms, six-month-old Hazel was giggling loudly, reaching her tiny hands up to play with my silver necklace. She had dark, sparkling eyes and a soft tuft of brown hair, healthy, happy, and entirely oblivious to the storm that had surrounded her birth.
Beside us, Sarah Thorne sat at a wrought-iron table, sipping iced tea while flipping through a stack of corporate reports.
"The new Vance Development Headquarters building in downtown Chicago officially opens next week," Sarah reported with a warm smile. "The board unanimously voted to name the grand atrium the Genevieve & Hazel Vance Center."
"That's lovely, Sarah," I smiled, lifting Hazel up to kiss her chubby cheek. "How are the legal fees for the charity foundation?"
"Fully funded," Sarah replied. "The Genevieve Vance Legal Defense Fund for victims of domestic abuse and corporate coercion has already taken on forty-two cases this month. Every woman who walks through those doors gets the best legal representation in the state, completely free of charge."
I looked out over the lawns where Dr. Ross was currently packing up his physical therapy equipment. My legs were fully recovered. I ran three miles every morning around the estate track, feeling stronger, healthier, and more grounded than I ever had in my life.
A sleek black car pulled up the winding driveway, stopping near the patio.
Detective Marcus Vance stepped out, carrying a large cardboard box filled with official police release documents and closed case files.
"Afternoon, ladies," Marcus said, removing his sunglasses and walking up the patio steps. "I brought the final court sign-offs. The divorce is officially finalized, Genevieve. Your name has been legally restored to Genevieve Vance, and Julian’s name has been permanently removed from Hazel’s birth certificate."
"Thank you, Marcus," I said, handing him a glass of fresh lemonade. "For everything."
Marcus looked down at Hazel, who let out a sweet, bubbling laugh as he held out a finger for her to grab.

"You did the hard work, Genevieve," Marcus said gently. "Most people would have broken under that kind of pressure. You stood your ground."
"I had a daughter to protect," I replied, looking at Hazel. "There was no other choice."
