Chapter 2 - The Lion and the Serpent

Andrew Vaughn stood in the doorway, framed by the warm, golden light of the VIP corridor. He looked immaculate. His silver-streaked hair was styled to perfection, his tuxedo fitted flawlessly over his lean, athletic frame. In his lapel, he wore a tiny golden lapel pin shaped like a human heart—the emblem of his life's work.

For a fraction of a second, as Andrew’s eyes swept over the room and caught Ethan Carter standing two feet from his fiancée, his polite smile faltered. A dark, ugly flicker passed through his eyes—a flash of possessive venom that vanished so quickly an observer would have sworn it was a trick of the light.

Then, the mask clicked back into place.

"Ethan!" Andrew exclaimed, stepping into the room with his arms slightly opened, the picture of warm, collegiate camaraderie. "I was wondering where the man of the hour had disappeared to. They’re calling for you near the wings. The senator wants a quick photo before the opening remarks."

Andrew turned his gaze to Ava. The warmth in his eyes turned microscopic, sharp, and evaluating. He walked over to her side, wrapping a long, heavy arm around her waist. His fingers dug—just a little too firmly, just a little too deliberately—into the soft flesh of her side, precisely where her ribs were bruised.

Ava held her breath, forcing her lips to curve into a practiced, elegant smile despite the hot spike of pain shooting up her spine.

"Darling," Andrew murmured, bending down to press a kiss against her cheek. His breath smelled of expensive scotch and peppermint. "You took so long fixing your makeup. Is everything all right?"

"Everything is fine, Andrew," Ava said smoothly, her voice remarkably steady despite the hurricane tearing through her chest. "Mr. Carter was just searching for his cufflinks. Someone misplaced them in the secondary dressing area."

Andrew’s grip on her waist tightened by a fraction. "Ah. Cufflinks." He looked up at Ethan, his smile widening, though his eyes remained dead and cold. "Did you find them, Ethan? It would be a shame for the host of the evening to look anything less than perfect."

Ethan didn't answer immediately. He stood at his full height, six-foot-two of hardened muscle and old money, towering over the surgeon. His hands were tucked casually into his trousers pockets, but Ava could see the tension radiating through his shoulders like a coiled steel spring.

"I found what I was looking for, Andrew," Ethan said. His voice was terrifyingly calm, devoid of any warmth. "A clear perspective."

Andrew’s eyes narrowed slightly. "Pardon?"

"The gala," Ethan said, stepping past Andrew toward the door, his shoulder brushing Andrew's with intentional, deliberate force. "We shouldn't keep the city waiting. After all, tonight is all about honoring heroes... and exposing fraud."

A thick, suffocating silence settled over the room as Ethan paused in the doorway, turning his head back just enough to look at Ava.

"Ava," Ethan said quietly. "Walk down with us. You're my executive assistant. I need you at my side for the announcements."

Andrew’s fingers dug deeper into Ava's waist, his knuckles turning white. "Oh, I think Ava can stay behind for a moment to rest, Ethan. She’s been working so hard lately. She looks terribly pale."

"She walks with me," Ethan repeated. The tone wasn't an invitation. It was a corporate command backed by forty billion dollars of capital and a legal team that could dismantle a hospital system before breakfast.

Andrew’s smile finally twitched. He released Ava's waist, smoothing his lapels with a quick, nervous motion. "Of course. Work comes first, naturally." He leaned into Ava's ear, his voice dropping to a whisper meant only for her. "We'll discuss your poor time management when we get back to the townhouse, sweet girl."

The words were soft, but to Ava, they sounded like a death sentence.
