Chapter 8 - The Dawn of Reckoning

At 6:30 a.m., Manhattan was bathed in the pale, cold light of a December dawn.

Outside Carter Tower, the sidewalk on Fifth Avenue was completely blocked by broadcast vans, news crews, and satellite dishes. Over forty major news networks had deployed teams after Ethan’s foundation issued an emergency press release announcing a "major statement regarding city leadership and medical safety."

Inside the grand marble lobby, security guards formed a barricade, holding back the surging crowd of journalists whose voices echoed off the two-story glass walls.

In the private holding suite behind the lobby, Ava stood in front of a full-length mirror.

She wore a sharp, double-breasted navy blazer suit, tailored flawlessly to her frame. Her dark hair was pulled back into a sleek, professional bun. Her skin was pale, but her eyes were clear, bright, and completely steady. She wore no jewelry—no engagement ring, no pearl necklaces.

The dressing room door opened softly.

Ethan walked in. He wore a crisp white shirt, a dark navy tie, and a tailored black suit coat. He looked like the formidable, forty-billion-dollar titan the financial world feared, but when his eyes met Ava's in the mirror, his expression softened instantly.

"The judge signed the emergency injunction ten minutes ago," Ethan said, standing beside her. "Dr. Vaughn has been officially barred from entering New York-Presbyterian Hospital. Federal marshals and state investigators are at his townhouse right now executing a search warrant for his medical records and private pharmacy stash."

Ava let out a long, slow breath, feeling a tremendous weight lift off her ribs. "And the little girl? Lily Chen?"

"Dr. Rostova and Chief Surgeon Miller took over the procedure twenty minutes ago," Ethan smiled softly. "The surgery is already underway under the safest hands in the country."

Ava closed her eyes for three seconds, silent tears of sheer relief slipping past her lashes. "Thank God."

Ethan reached into his inner jacket pocket and pulled out a small, folded piece of navy silk.

It was her blue scarf—the one she had accidentally left on his office couch four months ago during a late-night budget review.

Ava gasped softly. "You kept it."

"I kept it," Ethan admitted quietly, his voice thick with unshielded emotion. He didn't smooth over his confession. He didn't offer a corporate excuse. "Every morning for four months, I looked at this scarf on my chair, Ava. And every morning, I hated myself for respecting a boundary that was keeping you trapped in hell."

He held the soft silk out to her.

"I promised myself I would only give it back to you when you were completely free," Ethan whispered.

Ava looked at the scarf, then up at Ethan’s breathtaking, handsome face. She didn't take the scarf from his hand. Instead, she reached out, her delicate fingers wrapping around his hand, gently closing his fingers around the silk.

"Keep it a little longer, Ethan," Ava whispered, her voice trembling with a warmth she had denied herself for nearly a year. "Until this is over."

Ethan stared at her, his blue eyes burning with an intense, fierce devotion. He lifted her hand to his lips, pressing a soft, lingering kiss against her knuckles—not with ownership, but with reverence.

"It's time, Ava," he said softly.
