Chapter 6 - The Anatomy of a Predator

Ava stared at the tablet in her lap, her fingers scrolling frantically through the digital pages of evidence Ethan’s team had assembled.

It wasn't just about her.

"Oh my God," Ava breathed, her stomach turning as she read through a confidential medical report dated fourteen months ago. "Dr. Aris Thorne... the former pediatric resident who resigned abruptly last year?"

"She didn't resign," Ethan said, stepping closer to the sofa. "Andrew fabricated a story that she was stealing narcotics from the surgical pharmacy to cover up the fact that she had reported his surgical errors to the chief of medicine. When she threatened to go to the state medical board, Andrew used his political connections to revoke her medical license and ruin her reputation."

"And these financial entries?" Ava asked, pointing to a ledger showing six-figure wire transfers to offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands.

"Malpractice settlements paid out secretly through a shell company," Ethan explained smoothly. "Andrew has suffered tremors in his right hand for over a year due to an undisclosed neurological condition. Instead of stepping down from surgery, he’s been paying off surgical nurses and junior residents to cover up his mistakes in the operating room."

Ava dropped the tablet onto the sofa cushion, her mind reeling.

The man she had almost married wasn't just an abusive monster in private—he was a lethal fraud who was actively risking the lives of children on the operating table to protect his monstrous ego.

"He's operating tomorrow morning," Ava realized with a sudden, horrifying jolt of panic. "Ethan! He has a seven-hour arterial reconstruction scheduled at 8:00 a.m. on a four-year-old girl!"

Ethan’s eyes darkened instantly. "Not anymore he doesn't."

Before Ethan could say another word, the landline on his private desk began to ring. The red light on the encrypted console flashed brightly in the dim room.

Ethan walked over to the desk, pressed the speaker button, and leaned his hands on the mahogany surface.

"Speak," Ethan commanded.

"Mr. Carter," came the voice of Marcus, Ethan’s chief of private security. "We have a situation outside Carter Tower. Dr. Vaughn just arrived at the lower parking garage in his sports car. He’s arguing with building security, claiming he has a right to retrieve his fiancée. He brought two senior officers from the 19th Precinct with him, claiming Mrs. Ava is being held against her will."

Ava gasped, jumping up from the sofa, her hands flying to her mouth. "He brought the police?!"

"He’s using public authority to force my hand," Ethan said calmly, his expression unnervingly composed. He looked into the speaker unit. "Marcus, are the cameras recording the garage entrance?"

"Yes, sir. High-definition feed with audio."

"Good," Ethan said. "Inform the precinct officers that Mrs. Ava is currently resting in my private residence of her own free will, under the care of my legal counsel. Tell them if they wish to enter this building without a warrant signed by a federal judge, I will personally file civil rights charges against their department before the sun comes up."

"Understood, sir. What about Dr. Vaughn?"

Ethan looked over at Ava. The fear in her eyes was palpable, but beneath that fear, a new spark of resolve was beginning to ignite.

"Tell Dr. Vaughn," Ethan said into the microphone, his voice dripping with lethal promises, "that if he doesn't leave my property in ninety seconds, I will release the surgical tremor video from last month’s operation directly to the Wall Street Journal."

A beat of silence hung over the line.

"Copy that, Mr. Carter. Relaying the message now."

Ethan cut the line. He turned back to Ava, stepping away from the desk.

"He's desperate, Ava," Ethan said gently. "Desperate men make mistakes. Tonight, he tried to use his status as a shield. Tomorrow, we take the shield away."
