Chapter 10 - A Bright New Tomorrow
Two years later.
The summer sun shone brightly over a sprawling green park overlooking the ocean. Banners fluttered in the sea breeze, reading: ANNUAL FOUNDATION FOR PROTECTED CHILDREN FAMILY PICNIC.
Dozens of families, mothers, and children were gathered across the lawn, playing games, eating ice cream, and enjoying the laughter and freedom of a beautiful afternoon.
Among them were all nine of the older half-siblings discovered during the initial investigation, playing together in a massive game of soccer on the grass. They were no longer victims of a dark secret; they were a large, loving extended family, connected by blood and supported by an entire community that cared for them.
Near the edge of the park, beside a white wooden gazebo, Claire stood next to a handsome pediatric surgeon named David, whom she had met while working on the new hospital safety protocols. David held her hand gently, his thumb rubbing her knuckles as they watched the kids play.
Mara sat on a park bench nearby, enjoying a quiet moment, chatting comfortably with Assistant DA Vance, who had brought his own grandchildren to the picnic.
Out on the grass, Tessa Lane stood watching Ethan and Maya—now three years old—running toward her with dandelion flowers in their tiny hands.
"Mommy! Look!" Ethan cheered, thrusting a yellow flower into her palm. "For you!"
"I got one too!" Maya beamed, holding up hers.
Tessa knelt down on the soft grass, pulling both of her children close against her heart, smelling the sweet scent of clover and sunshine in their hair.
