Chapter 9 - Healing the Hearts

In a cozy, light-filled bungalow in the quiet coastal town of St. Augustine, the afternoon sun cast warm, golden rays through the living room windows.

Tessa Lane sat on a plush carpet, laughing happily as two eighteen-month-old toddlers crawled around her legs.

Baby Boy 19—now officially named Ethan—was a chubby, energetic little boy with bright blue eyes and a wide, mischievous smile. Beside him was his twin sister, Maya (formerly Twin B), a dark-haired girl with curious brown eyes who was currently trying to stack wooden building blocks into a tower.

Tessa looked healthy, radiant, and completely transformed. The hollow terror that had once consumed her face was gone, replaced by a deep, radiant peace.

The doorbell rang, and Ethan immediately dropped his toy, babbling happily as he scrambled toward the entryway. "Auntie Claire! Auntie Mara!"

Claire Dawson stepped inside, catching Ethan in a warm hug, lifting him high in the air as he giggled wildly. Behind her walked Mara Ellis, carrying a large bag of fresh pastries from a local bakery.

"Look at how big he’s getting!" Claire laughed, kissing Ethan’s soft cheek. "He’s going to be taller than me by his third birthday!"

"Maya just learned how to count to five with her blocks!" Tessa said proudly, standing up to give both women a tight embrace. "Come in, come in! I just put the kettle on."

The four of them sat around the kitchen island, drinking tea and watching the twins play together peacefully on the rug.

"How are your medical board proceedings going, Claire?" Tessa asked gently.

"I was officially appointed as the Chief of Pediatric Emergency Medicine at St. Anne’s last week," Claire smiled, holding her tea mug. "And our new hospital protocol for reporting suspicious donor-registry activities has been adopted statewide."

"And you, Mara?" Tessa looked at the detective.

"I’m officially retiring from the police department at the end of the month," Mara announced, taking a bite of a pastry. "I accepted a position as the Director of Child Protective Advocacy for the state. I’m going to make sure no organization ever uses charity as a front for cruelty again."

Tessa reached across the table, taking both of their hands in hers.

"I remember the night I left Ethan in that chapel," Tessa whispered, tears of gratitude welling in her eyes. "I was so terrified. I thought I was leaving him to die. I thought I would never see either of my children again."

"You were protecting him, Tessa," Claire said softly, squeezing her hand. "You were the bravest mother I’ve ever met. You gave us the clue that saved both of your children."
