Chapter 3 - The Ghost Farm

By 7:30 a.m., the rain had turned into a thick, gray fog hanging over the rolling hills of Oakridge County.

Mara stood beside a tactical command vehicle parked two miles down the road from an isolated twenty-acre estate listed in county property records as Bright Tomorrow Agricultural Learning Center. On paper, it was a educational sanctuary for inner-city youth. In reality, surrounded by an eight-foot chain-link fence topped with razor wire and security cameras, it looked like a high-security research compound.

"We have no search warrant for this specific address yet," Assistant District Attorney Arthur Vance warned, leaning over Mara’s shoulder inside the mobile command unit. "Nolan’s legal team filed an emergency injunction an hour ago. If we step onto that land without ironclad probable cause, any evidence we gather will be thrown out of court, and Nolan walks away scot-free."

"An emergency phone call from a kidnapped mother whose infant has been stolen isn't probable cause?!" Mara snapped, turning on her heel.

"Tessa Lane’s call came from an untraceable burner phone," Vance countered calmly. "Nolan’s lawyers will argue she’s a mentally unstable woman targeting their client out of spite. We need physical proof that Twin B is inside that compound right now."

Claire, who had insisted on accompanying the police unit in her capacity as the newborn’s attending physician, stepped forward.

"I can give you probable cause," Claire said firmly.

"How?" Mara asked.

"Nolan trusts me—or at least, he thinks his surveillance on me hasn't been compromised," Claire said, pulling a secondary medical scanner from her bag. "He sent me a text hours ago asking me to meet him. I will walk up to those gates. I’ll tell him I brought the extra blood samples he asked for from Baby 19. Once I’m inside, I’ll activate the hospital’s pediatric tracking transponder. Every newborn in our regional network is fitted with a microscopic RFID skin tag for security against abduction. I have the reader right here."

"Absolutely not," Mara said, her voice uncompromising. "It’s too dangerous. Nolan is cornered, Claire. A cornered sociopath doesn't negotiate."

"He won't hurt me if he thinks I’m still covering for him," Claire insisted, her voice tight with absolute determination. "Tessa is inside that building, bleeding from a fresh delivery, and a newborn infant is being prepped for an illegal procedure. We don't have three hours to wait for a judge to sign a piece of paper!"

Mara looked at Claire, seeing the quiet, unbreakable resolve in the doctor’s eyes. She knew Claire was right. Every minute they delayed, another innocent life was being pushed closer to the brink.

"Ten minutes," Mara said, pulling a tiny wireless earbud receiver from her tactical vest and handed it to Claire. "Put this in. The moment you confirm Twin B is on those premises, you give us the codeword 'Stat'. We crash the gates, warrant or no warrant."
