Chapter 10 - The Horizon

One year later.
The sun was rising over the blue waters of Amalfi, Italy.
Golden sunlight washed over the cliffside terrace of the restored white villa, illuminating the vibrant bougainvillea flowers cascading over the stone walls.
In the center of the terrace sat a long wooden table laid out with fresh fruits, warm pastries, and pots of steaming Italian coffee.
Theo, now six years old, was running happily along the stone path, wearing a white linen shirt and shorts, chasing a small golden retriever puppy that Ethan had surprised him with for his birthday.
"Careful near the steps, Theo!" I called out with a warm laugh, leaning over the stone balcony.
"I'm careful, Mommy! Look how fast Barnaby runs!" Theo shouted back, his bright laugh ringing through the clear morning air.
Ethan stepped out onto the terrace from the French doors, carrying a tray of fresh orange juice. He wore a simple white linen shirt, his dark hair messy from the sea breeze, looking younger, lighter, and happier than he ever had in his life.
He set the tray on the table, walked up behind me, and wrapped his arms around my waist, resting his hands gently over my visibly rounded, seven-month pregnant belly.
"How are my two girls feeling this morning?" Ethan whispered, kissing the side of my neck.
I smiled, laying my hands over his large palms resting on my belly, feeling the gentle, distinct kick of our baby daughter from within.
"She likes the sea air," I replied, leaning back against his chest, closing my eyes as the warm sun washed over us. "She’s been kicking all morning."
Ethan let out a low, deeply contented chuckle, his fingers gently caressing my stomach.
"Three years ago, I thought my life was a museum of cold marble and empty numbers," Ethan said softly, looking out at our son playing in the garden below. "I thought power was having everyone fear you."
He turned me in his arms so I was looking up into his clear, beautiful gray eyes—eyes that held no dark shadows of the past, only the bright, unbroken promise of our future.

"Now I know what power really is," Ethan whispered, pulling me close into a tender kiss. "Power is having a family to come home to."
Below us on the sunny terrace, Theo’s happy laughter echoed over the blue waters of the Mediterranean, carrying our broken past far out to sea, leaving only the warmth, love, and light of our unbroken home.
