Chapter 4 - The Shadows of the Board

By midnight, Theo was fast asleep in the master bedroom, surrounded by three security officers posted outside his door.

I walked down the grand spiral staircase into Ethan’s private study. The room smelled of old leather books, polished mahogany, and cognac. A fire crackled softly in the massive stone hearth.

Ethan was standing by the floor-to-ceiling windows, holding a crystal glass of amber liquid, looking out into the dark, rainy forest.

"Richard knows," I said softly, stepping into the dim light of the room.

Ethan didn't turn around, but he set his glass down on the heavy oak desk. "My intelligence network flagged three unauthorized inquiries into Oakridge medical records two days ago. Richard’s legal team was already tracking you, Emily. You didn't hide poorly. Richard kept your location hidden from me so he could use you as leverage when the annual board vote came up next month."

I gasped, my hand going to my throat. "What... what do you mean?"

Ethan turned to face me. The firelight cast long, sharp shadows across his carved features.

"If Richard proved you were alive and had a son, he was going to file an emergency guardianship petition claiming you were mentally unstable due to your fake death," Ethan explained, his voice low and dangerous. "He was going to try to gain legal custody of Theo, making himself the administrator of Theo’s thirty percent trust stock."

"He wanted my baby as a bargaining chip?!" I yelled, my blood running cold with terror.

"He wanted to," Ethan corrected, stepping toward me with slow, purposeful strides. "He won't get within a hundred miles of him now. You are inside the estate. My private military contractors control every entry point. Legal filings for Theo’s official recognition as my sole heir were submitted to the high court an hour ago."

He stopped right in front of me, taking both of my cold hands in his warm palms.

"Why didn't you trust me, Emily?" Ethan asked, his voice filled with an aching pain that shattered my defenses. "Six years ago... when my father showed you those fake reports... why didn't you come to me? Did you really think I would choose my family's money over you?"

"You loved your father, Ethan!" I sobbed, tears spilling over my eyes. "He built Brooks Global! You looked up to him! When he handed me those files and told me I was ruining your future, I believed him! And when I found out I was pregnant, I was terrified that your uncle would hurt the baby!"

Ethan pulled me hard against his chest. His arms wrapped around my waist like steel bands, holding me so tight I could feel the frantic, heavy pounding of his heart against my ribs.

"I didn't care about the company back then, Emily," Ethan whispered into my hair, his lips pressing against my temple. "I only built this empire so no one could ever force me to lose anything I loved again. I spent six years living in an empty castle. Don't leave me again. Please."

I buried my face in his chest, clutching his shirt, weeping for the six lost years, for the quiet dinners we never had, for the baby steps Ethan had missed.

For the first time in six years, the cold, suffocating weight of fear began to lift from my shoulders. But outside the high stone walls of the estate, the storm was only just beginning.
